Let's Throw the Bums Out

Here we are, months ahead of a national election, and already the political jockeying for positions has begun. Previous office-holders trying to make comebacks, and first timers hoping to get an early jump on the field are in the news. What to do? What to do?

I began my political life as a Democrat. I was in the service during the Kennedy administration. At the time, it was difficult not to like a young, vigorous president with a good-looking family living a story book existence. He was smart, too.

Then the impossible happened. Somebody killed my guy. His replacement was Lyndon Johnson, an old-time, Southern, arm-twisting, country politician. He played to the masses, and set the Democrat Party on a path of pandering to the poor in order to ensure their votes from generation to generation.

Enter the Great Society. The idea was to give the poor just enough financial assistance to keep them voting for Democrats, but not enough to actually help anybody. The Great Society was the great lie. It turned me toward the Republican way of thinking.

The Republicans were the ones who now expressed my ideas -- those being smaller government, less regulation and interference in people's private lives, and lower taxes. The theme of the party became, "It's your money, and the government can't spend it as wisely as you can."

These thoughts made sense to me. Keeping and spending my own money seemed very sensible indeed.

Nixon, Ford and Carter kept me guessing. From crooked and conniving to bland and boring, to downright embarrassing, they all made me question my convictions. Only the truly conservative end of the Republican Party gave me hope.

When Reagan was elected president, it all changed. This was my party, and my way of thinking.

However, I still had to endure several more years with Democrats controlling congress. They blocked the good efforts of my guys at every opportunity, but had less luck with President Reagan.

He was a Kennedy type -- bold, forward-looking, full of optimism and confidence. Failure was not an option. America could do anything we set our collective minds to. The man truly made a difference in the way we saw ourselves, and how the world saw us.

After President Reagan, George H.W. Bush did a good job overall. But he let himself get snookered by the Kennedy crowd.

He promised no new taxes. Then he caved by making deals with people who didn't keep their word (the Democratic Congress).

Once again, I was disappointed by my own people. President Bush let me down with the premature ending of the first Gulf War. He let Saddam off the hook, which later turned out to be a big mistake.

Then along came President Clinton. No matter how good he talked, I had a feeling that something wasn't right with the guy. How true.

In 1994, we elected a Republican Congress. I thought that finally we were going to see how things should be done.

And for a while, they actually did what they promised. The Republicans in Congress wrote and implemented "A Contract with America." It was a list of promises and needed things. I liked it a lot.

Finally somebody was looking out for people like me, and doing what I wanted done. Taxes were reduced, military funding increased, and the treasury was receiving increased revenue due to the expansion of commerce. We were balancing the budget, and business was expanding.

Then at last, we elected a Republican president with a Republican Congress. But did we? This fellow talked like a conservative. He lowered taxes. But he also let our borders go unprotected. To him, illegal aliens were necessary. We needed them.

We have run-away inflation, even though the government figures say otherwise. Most people know that the government figures are bogus. Yet, we accept the lies anyway.

Gold tells the true story of inflation by reflecting what world investors think. It's way up. Gas, and the oil it's made from, is way up. Food is much higher and new cars are out of sight. Pay a natural gas bill lately? Housing is outrageous. Yet they try to make us believe that inflation is under control. Ha!

Then of course we can talk about the budget. What budget? It looks like they just gave up and decided to spend money. We have a new Medicare plan for prescription drugs, aid to dependent children, aid to dependent anybody, and No Child Left Behind. They give grants to build bridges to no-where, and aid to every country in the world with a hand out. Sort of reminds me of the fellow with the Great Society idea.

Of course we can't forget the war. We won the thing (militarily) three years ago. Yet we are still there in Iraq, trying to make nice, with the hope that everybody will like us if we do enough good works. Never happen.

On top of that, we have a trade deficit that is bigger than anyone ever imagined it could be. Security? We don't even take care of our own ships. We let Arabs do it. We leave miles of border wide open. I don't get it. These guys aren't Republicans.

My point is this: Republican or Democrat, you can't trust them. It may have taken me 40 years to catch on, but it just proves that you can't fool all the people, all the time. I am on to them at last. They don't care about what I think or need. They just want to get re-elected.

So I suggest the following course of action. I say that no matter who is running, no matter what they say, no matter how good they talk or look, no matter how much they pray, throw the bums out. One term and that's it. They're toast.

From now on I will vote only for the challenger and not the incumbent. If you are presently in office, you won't get my vote.

If there is no incumbent, vote for the ugly guy. He'll appreciate it more. Go forth, and do likewise.

Why not come up with something positive? Why not go after democrats and leave the republicans alone?

Repeal the 17th, term limits would be useless.

It's the system, the 17th screwed us and gave us 4, I repeat, FOUR decades of Kennedy as senator. The founding fathers said, serve your country and go home, but today, it's a gravy boat, with bennies and a job us peons would love, but aren't allowed to have. The intention of serving in the house or senate was not a lifelong career.

Like sheep, there are some on this board that will defend the GOP to the very end.

Guess what, sheeple...the end is near.

How asinine can you get...having a temper tantrum, are we?

Even if you want to punish the RINOS, don't throw the conservatives out with them.

There are PLENTY of good conservatives in the house, and even some in the Senate, now.

It would be nice if the American Conservative Union put everyone with qualifying backgrounds in ie you can speak/lead with vigor, and you have a firm conservative background.

I'd much rather have a common joe that has those basic abilities, than a name or a person that's unfamiliar with the common man. That goes for my city council man to the president.

This is bunk. The majority of republicans in the house are conservative, but have to deal with a handfull of RINO's who vote too often with the dims. The same is nearly as true in the senate. Our problems are with a handfull of Rino's in the house and senate. Throwing them all out is stupid.
