Marine at Haditha: 'I Can Still Smell the Blood'
ABC News ^ | May 29, 2006 | JONATHAN KARL

Posted on 05/29/2006 6:12:03 PM PDT by Marli

Only hours after Iraqi civilians were killed, a second team of Marines was sent in to take the victims' bodies to a local morgue.

Lance Corp. Ryan Briones was among the Marines sent in to recover the bodies, and he told the Los Angeles Times he is still haunted by what he saw, including a young girl who was shot in the head.

"[The victims] ranged from little babies to adult males and females," Briones told the newspaper. "I can still smell the blood."

Briones says he and another Marine were told to photograph the bodies. Military officials say those photos — which they say show people shot at close range in the head and chest — clearly contradict initial reports that the civilians were killed by a roadside bomb.

I guess McCain isn't really serious about the GOP nomination after all. He'd rather be invited to DiFi's cocktail parties....

Thank you SO much for posting that...

It says a LOT of what I, and a lot of other posters have been saying tonight.

We just cannot convict these guys yet...there is a lot we don't know.

BUT, if they are guilty, after a fair trial, they will be dealt with.

I also found it interesting that HE too, commented on the bad timing of the Congress to want hearings....considering the earliest any trials might be is August.

Sorry, but I'm not buying that our Marines killed people in cold blood for no reason...not buying it at all!

you sir are an accessory to this attack on our troops. this is war, people get killed. Are you calling B17 bomber pilots criminals for killing thousands of civvies idiot

You sir are an idiot. B17 pilots were lucky if their bombs came close to hitting their targets. They didnt have precision munitions like we do today. Of course there were civilian casulties. That is why they call it collateral damage. What is being discussed here on the other hand is purposely moving from house to house and systematically killing unarmed women and children. Accidental deaths are not being alleged. The Marines stated the dead died from the IED, not gunfire. Now they have backtracked and admit they were shot. Duh?

If there is information that there is no evidence of this incident being a massacre, premature hearings might not be a bad idea politically. This will expose the Democrats as the anti Military, Blame America First'rs they are

This "Americans need to have higher standards" stuff...

If we had had Free Republic, back during WWll...and after every battle, had a chance to debate whether the troops had justification for every enemy they shot..imagine how we would be yelling at each other..

And, when the bombs fell in Nagasaki and Hiroshima...what do you think all of us would be saying???

Just like I don't think it is right for retired military to get on TV during the middle of a war, and call the DOD and CIC, liars and idiots...

I don't think WE can sit in our safe seats...and kibbutz a WAR!!

Perhaps you should start writing for the msm yourself. So far, the only info that we have that a crime was committed is from the msm, iraqis, politicians and "unamed" defense members, all with 0 credibility. 'Course you seem to have bought it.

The Commandant of the Marine Corps flew to Iraq this week to personally remind his troops that they can not kill unarmed civilians. Do you think he would go there to make that statement if this was all smoke and mirrors.

Thank you for an excellent post.

We do not know if what is being alleged happened. So far, we have only heard publicly from people who have been horribly shaken by the incident or have a political ax to grind...and that includes the press. That seems suspicious.

On the other hand, in a force as large as ours in Iraq and under as much pressure as working Marines are under, bad stuff can happen. Let me be blunt—even a few on our team are criminals. So what is being alleged is certainly not impossible.

Am I bracing for the worst? Of course. To do anything less would be unrealistic. Am I hoping for the best. Of course. Anything less would be unAmerican.

BUT, what stuns me is that a country so willing to give Michael Jackson the benefit of the doubt is so eager and willing to condemn and believe these reports when we have not seen the results of the investigation, the charges or the evidence.

In my opinion, that is a travesty in and of itself. If these men are found guilty, they will have brought scorn upon themselves, unworthy of the title "US Marine" and punished to the full extent of the law.
Until then, we should at least offer them what we offered MJackson—the benefit of the doubt. Anything less is shameful.

based on the press coverage of this so far - yes, he would do that. these marines have already been convicted by the US media, many US politicians, and many people here on FR.

Well, what is the rush to publicize that something bad has gone on here? Want to beat the MSM in trashing all our military men?

Who are the military men/women anyway? They are people that live in the United States - good people, bad people, maybe even some that are murderers. Who knows - we have murderers here in the U.S., why would there be a surprise that possibly some managed to join the military hoping they would get to shoot someone?

But - as we all know 95% or more are defending their country with their lives and thereby earn the full respect of the Americans sitting home criticizing them.

Haven't been smoking anything Dave. I just know how these things work. Lesson learned from the Vietnam era. THE TRUTH WILL NEVER COME OUT. Marines may go to prison but THE TRUTH WILL NEVER COME OUT. The MSM and Jack Murtha's of the world want their blood and power back. Have a nice day sonny.

I've been following his remarks for quite some time. He seems very altruistic, like a school teacher, and 90 degrees out of phase with most of my thoughts. Maybe because I'm a business man and deal in tough facts of the real world; and believe in the Constitution.

Oh my, McCain running scared..........saw a camera opportunity and was afraid the military would grab it.

Only McCain can investigate ........especially if it involves a camera.

Here is how I look at this thing:

If it is a matter of the Marines going in and knowingly shooting defenseless women and children, then it is a war crime and must be punished harshly. However, I find this very unlikely.

If it is a matter of Marines firing upon a structure from which they were taking fire, and in the process killing a bunch of women and children, I would like to see a writ of War is Hell to be issued, and everybody get off with administrative punishment, loss of rank or dishonorable discharge, etc.

The enemy hides amongst the civilians. That makes the work of the Marines very difficult and dangerous.

STFU sinkspur. Why don't you wait until these men have been convicted before you go all over the forum gloating. I lost all respect for you a long time ago, but lately you make me physically ill.

Is this what passes for intelligent discourse from you these days?

Profanity, ad hominems, and profound disappointment?

No one is allowed on FR to express concern that some Marines may have lost control and killed innocent people?
