Greenpeace Invades Big Island, Chops Papaya Trees

Its happening. Anti-technology activists who describe themselves as environmentalists are on the Big Island chopping down papaya trees. Big Island farmers may be at risk of eco-terrorism as part of a Greenpeace anti-genetic modification (GM) campaign focused on events half a world away—in Thailand.

In a May 25 publicity stunt dutifully picked up on the front page of the Hawaii Tribune-Herald, West Hawaii Today and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Greenpeace operatives backed by photographers donned white full-body “haz-mat suits” (actually painters' suits available at many hardware stores) and posed for the cameras.

They wrapped a small section of a 9.1 acre garden bought 18 months ago in Puna by anti-GM activist Terri Mulroy in red “biohazard tape” (available from mail-order sources) and then viciously hacked to death at least two perfectly good papaya trees, calling them “contaminated.” The entire episode is described in a news release from the Washington DC office of Greenpeace “media officer” Jane Kochersperger.

According to her account, “several local farmers and native Hawaiian activists joined Greenpeace ‘experts’ in ‘decontaminating’ an organic farm (sic) .”

Greenpeace operatives' ability to spot the so-called “contaminated” papaya trees may be due to the fact that Papaya Ring Spot Virus has destroyed almost all non-GM papaya trees. Any healthy, green papaya tree on the Big Island is likely to be modified.

The stirring battle cry of the totalitarian: "Live the way we want you to live, or we reserve the right to destroy, kill, main, and demolish anything we want."

My garden (just planted - it is Alaska!) is FILLED with genetically modified plants. The berries in the back are a domesticated cultivar of the western thimbleberry; the difference is that my production is about four times what the forest provides. The genetically modified currants had their genes tampered with in Sweden over generations as people attempted to get the largest berry from a single plant. I daresay that any flower in my garden that was advertised with a color different from its wild counterpart has been genetically modified. As for my genetically modified tomatoes, it's just plain cool to be able to grow tomatoes right next to the Arctic Circle outside in a raised bed.

Greenpeace: What a ship of fools.

Any healthy, green papaya tree on the Big Island is likely to be modified.

OR...
possibly is a RARE example of NATURAL immunity.

I don't know the cultivation of papaya or the details of Papaya Ring Spot Virus.

But I would not be suprised that these brave eco-warriors haven't
just destoyed a source of NON-GM immunity.
That could likely be used to breed more immune papaya plants.

A few years back a band of these merry terrorists hacked down a
stand of corn at a university experimental farm in a protest against GM corn.

All of the destroyed corn plants were NOT genetically-modified;
they were ALL natural plants.

It isn't easy being greenpeace these days....

[excerpt]

It may be increasingly difficult for the Greenpeace operatives to avoid ingesting the so-called “bio-hazards”. They cannot be cheese-eaters because 80 to 90 percent of cheese produced in the US is curdled with the enzyme chymosin produced by genetically modified bacteria. (Prior to GM chymosin production, the enzyme was obtained from slices of calf stomach thrown into a vat of milk.)

They can’t eat tofu because 60 percent of the world’s soybean production is GM soy. They can’t smoke pot because much of the marijuana sold in the US and around the world is genetically modified with colchicine which doubles or triples the amount of genetic material, thus increasing the THC content. They cannot satisfy their ‘munchies’ by gobbling down corn flakes or drinking soda sweetened with corn syrup because about 24 percent of worldwide corn production and about 50 percent of US corn production is GM corn.

They cannot wear blue jeans or cotton shirts because much of the world’s cotton production is from the more productive genetically-modified varieties. If they suffer from diabetes they will have to go back to the old-fashioned daily bovine insulin shots. The human insulin available today is produced by genetically modified bacteria.

I think if "these kids" are over 18, they should spend some serious time in outer space after paying the owner double retribution.

Please note the almost and likely. They could have been naturally disease resistant like the few stands of American Chestnuts that are left.

The funny thing about these losers is that all food, unless you pick it wild in the woods is modified. Orange carrots are modified (they are naturally maroon), so are potatoes (naturally poisonous) corn, (totally man made). These guys are going to be very hungry if they eat only unmodified food.
