Bush's Treasury Nominee Gave to Dems
Human Events ^ | May 30, 2006 | Robert B. Bluey

Posted on 05/30/2006 2:00:26 PM PDT by boryeulb

President Bush’s nominee to lead the Department of the Treasury has a history of giving money to Democrats and liberal causes. Former President Bill Clinton, Democratic presidential candidate Bill Bradley, Sen. Chuck Schumer and the pro-abortion Emily’s List have benefited from his largesse, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

The nominee, Henry M. Paulson Jr., chief executive of Goldman Sachs, has given tens of thousands of dollars to Republicans over the past 15 years, but prior to 2000 he also donated money to Democrats who are staunchly opposed to Bush’s agenda.

In fact, during Bush’s campaign for the White House in 1999, Paulson gave $1,000 to Bradley, who sought and eventually lost the Democratic nomination to Al Gore. Paulson gave $2,000 to Sen. John McCain (R.-Ariz.) prior to the 2000 election, but there is no record of his donating to Bush.

Paulson has given more than $20,000 to the liberal League of Conservation Voters since 1998. It is one of his favorite charities. In 1997 he donated $500 to Emily’s List, a group that backs candidates who support abortion.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D.-N.Y.), a member of the Finance Committee, was the recipient of two $1,000 gifts in 1996. Paulson also gave $2,000 to incumbent Republican Sen. Alfonse D’Amato, but those gifts came a year earlier.

Shortly after Bush nominated Paulson this morning, Schumer offered his unwavering support. “His experience, intelligence and deep understanding of national and global economic issues make him the best pick America could have hoped for,” said Schumer, according to the Associated Press.

Sen. Evan Bayh (D.-Ind.) received a $1,000 check from Paulson in 1997 when Bayh was running against Republican Paul Helmke. Sen. Chris Dodd (D.-Conn.) was the beneficiary of a $1,000 check in 1989. The late Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D.-Tex.) received $1,000 in 1991.

Even former President Bill Clinton scored $1,000 from Paulson in 1992. Clinton was running against Bush’s father at the time. During the 1992 election cycle, Paulson also donated $1,000 to George H.W. Bush, but those checks were written in 1991—at least two months before he gave to Clinton.

Writing for HUMAN EVENTS today, Steven Milloy of the Free Enterprise Education Institute has outlined the ideological and ethical challenges that could face Paulson as he awaits a hearing in the Senate.

This isn't to say defiantly that he is liberal or conservative, these could be direct donations or they could be in-kind donations for his wife (based on her donation patterns the latter seems likely)

A man who will donate to extreme left-wing causes just because his wife likes them is someone to watch out for. If he doesn't agree with those liberals causes, then he's under his wife's influence to a scary degree. (I'd say the same if the roles were reversed, so no sexism here.)

If just the wife donated, then yes, no big deal. But he donated himself. That tells me a lot.

Wow...according to your info Paulsen gave $25,000 to the National Republican Senatorial Cmte as recently as '05.

He definitely is NOT a Hillary-backer.

Thanks for the additional info.

I see other Conservative groups like TOMPAC on there that I didn't see on my search but I still cannot find a single donation to Emily's List. Do you know if they go by another name?

This statement from the article seems to be flatly untrue

On that much we can agree. HOWEVER, it seems clear to me that MOST of his Republican donations came after Bush was in office which makes me even more suspicious of his conservative credentials. I'm not saying that this is the case at all, but be prepared for some to point out how this could be interpreted as the guy hoping to get in good with the current administration by donating tons of money and Bush repaying him with a very high-level spot.

That, or "why would Terry Jeffries intentionally mislead about a Treasury Secretary nominee? Twice?"

Nino, be careful before believing everything you read.

The article is wrong on some points. They may be wrong about Emily's List as well.

Human Events definitely has a burr under its saddle about Paulson. This is the second negative, misleading story Jeffrey's outfit has put out about him today.

And the Basher-Bots are eating this s*** with a spoon.

The FReeper who posted this is also the author, if I read it correctly. Rob(ert) Bluey backwards is boryeulb.

While you may be correct about the League of Conservation Voters donations being his wife's, Hank Paulson is a big 'environmental' guy, so it would make sense that he'd also favor conservation issues. His contributions for Republicans don't say much either. Arlen Specter? He's Senator Pro-Choice (R) fuhevinsakes. There's the Emily's List donation explanation. Paulson is also best of buds with NYC Mayor Blechburg, a former Democrat who also favors 'women's right to choose.'

Henry may not have a say in policy other than that which touches the Treasury, but he's definitely not a Conservative Republican. I guess President Bush doesn't think there are any Conservative Republicans who have the needed avarice to get his nod for the nomination?

Many would be wise to heed those words. As it turns out, it was an easy way to identify the "I hate Bush and will believe anything ugly about him no matter what" bunch.

Paulson made $30 million last year.

Why would he need to be Treasury Secretary, a position that has nothing to do with his pet cause, the Nature Conservancy?

Being pragmatic and good with money just shows how utterly unqualified for the Treasury slot this guy is. </sarcasm>

Thanks. This seems more and more like a guy who will change his colors depending on the person in office.

Oh, and donating for Specter? How that could ever be interpreted as a good thing I'll never understand.
