PINE RIDGE, South Dakota -- The Oglala Sioux Tribal Council voted yesterday to outlaw abortion on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and suspend tribal president Cecelia Fire Thunder until impeachment proceedings could be brought against her.
Fire Thunder made headlines when she vowed to open an abortion mill at Pine Ridge in defiance of the new state law passed earlier this year banning abortion. However, the tribal council decided otherwise and took action to bring tribal law into agreement with South Dakota state law.
This is a loud and clear message to the abortion crowd that the people of South Dakota, no matter the race, creed, color, or heritage, overwhelmingly support the South Dakota legislature in banning abortions, said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. We thank the Oglala tribe and applaud them for their courageous vote to protect the lives of the innocent. The abortion ban has yet to take effect. Earlier this week, abortion supporters presented signatures to the state seeking a ballot initiative that would put the abortion ban to a vote.
We believe yesterdays actions by the Oglala people to ban abortion on their native soil is indicative of the support we believe the abortion ban enjoys in the state of South Dakota, said Newman. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Pro-life sentiments are continuing to sweep across the nation and the state legislatures. The days of decriminalized abortion are numbered.
A tip of my hat to the Oglala people for banning abortion on their native soil
Applause.
Good for them!
They decided to have no more legalized bloodletting on their soil
l'chaim!
Thank God for people with common sense and decency.
Absolutely! I hadn't heard anything about the proposed tribal abortion clinic since the first headlines. I'm glad for this follow up.
These people are evidently much more decent than most Americans in the "mainstream." Now just wait for our media to start stirring up another Indian war.
Am pinging the Elk to this one as he has a longstanding interest in the Sioux tribe. I should think that this follows well in the tradition of Red Cloud.
Ditto that. It shows they got some brains too. Granted some non-Indians would be using the clinic but who do you think most of the customers would be?
Silly stuff like this is what happens when a woman is elected as a leader.
Keep that in mind when it's Condi vs. Hillary in '08. Both support abortion.
Women, believe it or not, are more inclined to be pro-life than men.
Good for them!
