Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - June 2006

Posted on 06/01/2006 7:04:43 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Al-Qaeda's Long March to War
(Full Story)

In recent weeks, media reports from both Iraq and Afghanistan have suggested the appearance of a slow evolution of the Islamist insurgents' tactics in the direction of the battlefield deployment of larger mujahideen units that attack "harder" facilities.

These attacks are not replacing small-unit attacks, ambushes, kidnappings, assassinations and suicide bombings in either country, but rather seem to be initial and tentative forays toward another stage of fighting.

Collateral damage happens (sounds better than that other slogan!).

I would think the next few days/weeks should be a little more worrisome than usual, even without any previous concerns. The jihadists have a history of trying to respond to things like the death of major leaders with an attack.

Fatwa "approves" 1st Islamic washing machine

Snip: The machine (see photo) has a washing unit for ears, mouth and face, one for forearm and elbow washing and another for feet and ankles, according to Islamic norms on prayer. Completely computerized, AWWs will save water and time, and, said their inventor, “they work without having to touch any taps as they are operated by infrared sensors”. In three minutes, ablutions are done. No price has been fixed yet for the machine, but it will be "affordable”, continued the inventor, who is already planning a model for families.

Gomez said the idea of such a machine came to him as he was on a ferry trip between Taba in Egypt and Aqaba in Jordan. “The toilet was dirty and very crowded," he said, "and many pilgrims were performing their ablutions putting their legs in the wash basin and then standing on the dirty floor, which is not hygienic at all."

Explosives theft case heads to court

Snip: They're accused of stealing 100 sticks of explosives from BRB Contractors in Northwest Topeka. Police say the men were trying to sell the explosives and thousands of dollars worth of other items on the street.

That mumps outbreak in Kansas totaled 725 cases through May 22nd

Snip: ...the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has reported 725 cases of mumps in Kansas. Douglas county is the hardest hit with 270 cases of Mumps. Kansas usually logs zero to three mumps cases per year. The mumps epidemic is the nation's first in 20 years.

FYI Snip: The state (of Iowa) has seen more than 1,889 cases of the illness this year, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health Web site.

Dozens Fall Ill at IHOP in Arkansas

More than two dozen people became ill after inhaling a substance believed to have been sprayed inside an IHOP restaurant, police said.

Authorities were trying to determine the source of the substance that forced the restaurant's evacuation Tuesday evening.

Some customers were gasping for air, and one complained of shortness of breath and a burning sensation in his nose and throat. Four were taken to hospitals, police said.

"Due to the symptoms of the victims, it is believed that some substance, such as tear gas or some similar substance, may have been sprayed in the seating area of the restaurant," Patrolman Jonathan Landrum said. (snip)

Thank you for the ping RR, I probably would have missed that.

For some reason I was compelled to stop at the store and buy more stuff today. I stocked up, plus I needed butter but all they had was mantaquilla.....so I bought another brand.

I kind of wish the news media wouldn't be going ga ga over this death. Yes, it was a big get, but we are really inflaming the muslimes who don't need much prompting to get mad and get even.

A bit more info:

Authorities looking into suspicious cell phone purchases
(Brownsville, TX)

“These are the same type of phones that were used in the Madrid bombings,” Manrrique said.

According to the police report, the men were last seen at the Family Dollar store near the corner of Southmost Boulevard and La Villita Street inside a dark blue Jeep Cherokee.

Manrrique said the two men involved in the suspicious purchases left the chips, chargers and packaging behind at one of the stores, allowing investigators to check for fingerprints and other evidence.

Christian forced to reproduce lesbian films sues
Businessman claims county-order violates his religious beliefs, values

A film-and-video lab owner has filed suit against a county Human Rights Commission for ordering him to duplicate two pro-homosexual videos produced by a lesbian activist.

Tim Bono and Bono Film and Video, Inc. of Arlington, Va., is challenging the authority of the Arlington County Human Rights Commission, the Arlington County Board and Arlington County.

The controversy began when Tim Bono was contacted by lesbian activist Lilli Vincenz via e-mail to reproduce documentaries entitled "Gay and Proud" and "Second Largest Minority."

Bono told Vincenz his company does not duplicate material that is obscene, could embarrass employees, hurt the company's reputation or runs counter to the company's core values and to Christian ethics.

Vincenz filed a complaint with the Arlington Human Rights Commission under the county's nondiscrimination ordinance, which was amended to include "sexual orientation."

On April 13, the commission entered a decision directing Bono Film to "provide the requested duplication service at the complainant's expense or in the alternative to assist the complainant in locating a suitable facility where this service can be provided at the Bono Film and Video's expense."

Bono, represented by Florida-based Liberty Counsel, argues Virginia law, under a provision called "Dillon's Rule," prohibits local government from passing or enforcing nondiscrimination laws that are not authorized by the state.

The state does not list "sexual orientation" as a protected civil right or class.

Liberty Counsel says that in addition to removing the county commission's authority to enforce "sexual orientation" nondiscrimination laws, the lawsuit also will affect several other Virginia counties that have illegally passed "sexual orientation" antidiscrimination laws.

The suit also alleges violations of Bono's freedom of speech and free exercise of religion.

Erik Stanley, chief counsel of Liberty Counsel, contends that just as a newspaper is not required to run every proposed ad, a duplicator or printer is not obligated to reproduce every proposed copy.

"Mr. Bono does not have to reproduce a customer's hate speech, obscenity or pornography, nor may a customer hijack Mr. Bono's business and force him to promote a homosexual agenda," he said.

Stanley points out that several years ago, the Virginia attorney general issued an opinion concluding that local "sexual orientation" laws violated state law.

Bono's case is similar to that of Scott Brockie, a Canadian Christian printer who was penalized $5,000 in 2001 for refusing to print letterhead for a homosexual advocacy group.
