CHICAGO — U.S. agents, working in cooperation with the Mexican government, have closed down a lab in Mexico that might be the main source of a powerful painkiller that has killed at least 100 heroin users in eight states, the federal drug czar said Monday.

John Walters, director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, said it's still not clear whether the painkiller, fentanyl, was mixed with heroin at the lab in Mexico or after it entered the United States.

"If drugs were sold legally by licensed and regulated manufacturers in licensed and regulated businesses the demand for 'home cooked' flavors of drugs would be greatly reduced."

I read that if the first dose of Fentanyl doesn't kill you, it will definitely hook you.

Do you really want a drug like that legal? There would be pushers slipping it to unexpecting people. Some of the people who took the bad heroin thought they were taking pure heroin and didn't know they were getting Fentanyl.

It suppresses breathing. You stop breathing.

Oh hell no. No way should a drug that potent be available to everyone. A drug like that should ONLY be used for surgeries or chronic pain patients in controlled released medicines. Heroine shouldn't be legal either. Heroine is just Morphine that hasn't been as 'refined'. I believe that some of the 'recreational' drugs should be regulated and sold legally to adults. I'm sure if this is done it would reduce demand for the harder drugs. No one can say so for sure, but people are using hard drugs now, and the lesser drugs are still illegal. I just don't see the logic of something like hard liquor being legal to buy, and something like marijuana be illegal(no I don't use it). It doesn't make any sense because hard liquor is worse for you physically than marijuana, and causes physical dependence.

IIRC Heroin is refined morphine which is refined opium.

Ahh. I'm not a pharmacist, and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, was just repeating what a Dr. told me once. What does IIRC mean? I've seen that a few times on other threads.

"The medicine is so strong it's measured in microliters, and is 80 times more potent than Morphine."

It is measured in Micrograms.

Does anyone know what kind of death this would cause? What I mean is, what symptoms would be exhibited in a person who had taken this? I ask because I know of someone who died under mysterious circumstances recently.

In order as follows:
Decreased blood pressure and heart rate.
Decreased consciousness.
Lack of consciousness.Respiratory arrest and death.

PS
The war on drugs is a joke. The war keeps the prices high and gives the bad guys that bring this crap into the country a monopoly and insane profits that are used to promote more crime. The answer to the problem is very simple. Legalize it and take the crime out of it. Give help to those that want help to kick the habit. Be grateful that those that want to live their life in a drug induced haze will probably overdose or live on the fringes of society and not harm us as they do today

Mississippi had the highest per capita consumption of alcohol in the nation when it was a dry state. When Mississippi went wet, alcohol consumption went down.

Opium is the unrefined product of the poppy plant. It has many alkaloids in it, several of which but not all are very effective pain killers and also addictive. Morphine is one of the alkaloids. Heroin is simply morphine that has a slightly different chemical structure that makes it much more lipid soluble. Because of this increased lipid solubility it will cross the "blood brain barrier" much more easily than morphine and thus is a much more effective pain killer and much more addictive

Mainland China SOLVED their drug problem arond 1947? very effectively. If we would do the same, we wouldn't have such a problem. However, few want to listen.
