THE country's most influential Catholic has offended Islamic leaders for the second time in a month by declaring Islam more warlike than Christianity.
Australia had not been much changed by the rising Islamic threat after September 11, 2001, the Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, said. But this could change depending "on how many terrorist attacks" Islamic extremists could "bring off successfully".
"The million-dollar question" was whether intolerance was a modern distortion of Islam or arose out of internal logic.
"It's difficult to find periods of tolerance in Islam. I'm not saying they're not there, but a good deal of what is asserted is mythical."
Dr Pell's comments came in an interview in Rome with John L. Allen, a well-regarded correspondent of National Catholic Reporter. Allen suggested that under the new Pope, Benedict XVI, a more hawkish climate has developed and Islam is being directly challenged on issues of terrorism and religious freedom.
Only last month Dr Pell stirred controversy when he asserted that the Koran was riddled with "invocations to violence", and Islam was not a tolerant religion.
Keysar Trad of the Islamic Friendship Association said Dr Pell's statement showed he had no understanding of Islam.
Its amazing how Muslims are so offended by the truth.

"Dr." is normal British (and hence Aussie) usage in reference to a bishop or senior clergyman, either Catholic or Anglican. It's not meant as an insult.

Our Crusades period was fairly short compared to the Islam wars that raged in the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Europe, plus they helped topple one of the oldest empires: Byzantium (lasted longer than Rome).
Take your Post and every time Allah is mentioned substitute the word Satan and you have the crux of the Islamic religion.

Whatever way "hell" is said in Arabic, that is what His Eminence should continue giving those Islamist murderers.
It's an easy mistake to make - after all, they usually ARE looking for some way to insult him!

Either way, it's amazing to me how just about every religion is based on simply what someone says and writes, but little else and nothing concrete.
His Eminence prefers to be referred to as Dr Pell, when he is writing or speaking, or being quoted on matters of general theological knowledge and theory. When talking about Catholic doctrine or matters of pure religion, he, of course, wishes to be referred to by his religious title.
But being a Cardinal doesn't make him an expert on other faiths - his academic status is more relevant in those cases.

Take it from a "National Catholic Reporter" writer to say that. The fact is that there is nothing "hawkish" about Christians confronting Islam as the supporter of terrorism and religious persecution it has become. It is virtually a duty to do so, and I hope this is being the case under Benedict XVI's watch.
