The US Senate: Wash. DC's version of Hollywood's `Retired Actors (Old Folks) Home',
but more liberal.

"...the people of West Virginia.... sent me here 48 years ago." At 88, Byrd looks frail and walks with two canes.

Byrd is a walking testimony for the need of term limits!

Does Ted Kennedy get the honor of being Americas longest swerving senator?

Byrd was first elected to the Senate in 1958 and another despicable creature was elected, I believe, in 1962 - Ted Kennedy.

-- He said his views changed most dramatically after his teen-age grandson was killed in a 1982 traffic accident that the senator said put him in a deep emotional valley.

"The death of my grandson caused me to stop and think," said Byrd, adding he came to realize that black people love their children as much as he does his. --

He didn't realize until 1982 that black people love their children?? You have to be kidding me - and this guy is a respected member of the Senate?

What do you call a former member of the Ku Klux Klan who tied up the world’s oldest deliberative body for 14 hours to oppose the Civil Rights bill of 1964, and voted against the Supreme Court appointments of both Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas? ...

Sen. Byrd was a “Kleagle,” a recruiter who earned $10 for each new member he signed up for the sheet brigade.

Although Byrd was intelligent enough to cut official ties with the Klan in 1943 (today he calls it a youthful mistake), he wrote, in a letter to the Grand Wizard in 1946, that ...

“The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virgina.”

Once Byrd was elected to the West Virginia state senate, he wrote a letter decrying the integration of the nation’s armed forces, saying he would never fight

“with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt, never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”

This tells you a great deal about the voters in West Virginia!

I don't know that he ever left the KKK, only that he said he did to gain political office.

" he came to realize that black people love their children as much as he does his. "

Byrd must still be using the sheets as underwear to make idiotic insensitive comments like this. It took him till 1982 to realize this - 20 years after the Civil Rights movement? Why wouldn't a Black parent love his grandchild as much as "sheets Byrd" does his ?
Lott would have been senting packing by the media and NAACP had he said as much. Oh yeah, I kind of remember him stepping down from majority leadership hounded by the drive-by-ers.

I like to legislate. I feel I've done a lot of good." Sen. Robert Byrd.

"You have been sitting here too long for the good you have been doing. Be gone, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!" Cromwell, to the Rump Parliament.

Records are fine," said Byrd, a Democrat who has held a number of Senate leadership posts. "But what's important is what I do for the people of West Virginia. They are the ones who sent me here 48 years ago."

One of the best arguments for term limits that can be found. Every other building in West Virgina seems to be named the "Robert Bird" something or other. Paid for with your income tax dollars of course. Dollars that could have been spent buying bombs, bullets and beans, and paying the salary of many hundreds of thousands more troops.
