Writer facing jail for mosque threat

By Malcolm Moore in Milan
(Filed: 07/06/2006)

The Italian author Oriana Fallaci, who once wrote that Muslims "breed like rats", may be facing up to three years in prison after she vowed to blow up a mosque.

Ms Fallaci, 75, who has cancer, is due to appear in court next week charged with the lesser offence of vilifying Islam, punishable with a £3,450 fine.

But after her latest outburst in the New Yorker last week Muslim leaders are demanding that she be tried for inciting religious hatred, which carries a three-year jail term.

The former journalist, who has said she will not attend Monday's hearing in Bergamo, told the magazine that she intended to destroy a mosque being built at Colle di Val d'Elsa, near Siena.

"I do not want to see a 24-metre minaret in the landscape of Giotto when I cannot even wear a cross or carry a Bible in their country, so I blow it up!" she said. In a trilogy of books published after the attacks of September 11, Ms Fallaci lamented the Islam "invasion" into Europe.

Judge Armando Grasso ruled in a preliminary hearing that Ms Fallaci had made 18 statements "offensive to Islam and Muslims".

Following her most recent comments, Adel Smith, the president of the Italian Muslim Union, said he would press for the sterner charge of inciting religious hatred.

Oriana is an Italian hero of this war. Her books and articles paint Islam for what it is - something the politically correct Europeans do not know how to handle.

Excellent article. I'll excerpt this part:

"According to Fallaci, Europeans, particularly those on the political left, subject people who criticize Muslim customs to a double standard. “If you speak your mind on the Vatican, on the Catholic Church, on the Pope, on the Virgin Mary or Jesus or the saints, nobody touches your ‘right of thought and expression.’ But if you do the same with Islam, the Koran, the Prophet Muhammad, some son of Allah, you are called a xenophobic blasphemer who has committed an act of racial discrimination. If you kick the ass of a Chinese or an Eskimo or a Norwegian who has hissed at you an obscenity, nothing happens. On the contrary, you get a ‘Well done, good for you.’ But if under the same circumstances you kick the ass of an Algerian or a Moroccan or a Nigerian or a Sudanese, you get lynched.” The rhetoric of Fallaci’s trilogy is intentionally intemperate and frequently offensive: in the first volume, she writes that Muslims “breed like rats”; in the second, she writes that this statement was “a little brutal” but “indisputably accurate.” She ascribes behavior to bloodlines—Spain, she writes, has been overly acquiescent to Muslim immigrants because “too many Spaniards still have the Koran in the blood”—and her political views are often expressed in the language of disgust. Images of soiling recur in the books: at one point in “The Rage and the Pride” she complains about Somali Muslims leaving “yellow streaks of urine that profaned the millenary marbles of the Baptistery” in Florence. “Good Heavens!” she writes. “They really take long shots, these sons of Allah! How could they succeed in hitting so well that target protected by a balcony and more than two yards distant from their urinary apparatus?” Six pages later, she describes urine streaks in the Piazza San Marco, in Venice, and wonders if Muslim men will one day “shit in the Sistine Chapel.”

As an aside, Siena is one of my favorite cities in the world. It just wouldn't seem right to look out from the old town and see a minaret.

The Italians should make a deal with the Saudis: one mosque in Italy for every Church built in Saudi and every Bible distributed.

Do you know why the Muzzies won't allow other religions in their countries?

Because it would be the end of Islam!

Has someone asked who is "Islam" that they are offended? Has someone asked if Islam is offensive to Christians, or Italians?

"Ms Fallaci had made 18 statements "offensive to Islam and Muslims".

-- -- --

So WHO determined that these 18 statements were "offensive", and why? Can a statement of truth still be considered offensive in Italy?

Fallaci refuses to recognize the limitations of this metaphor—say, the fact that Muslim immigration is not the same as an annexation by another state.

If only this were true. Unfortunately in Europe, Muslims are not just the latest group of immigrants wanting to adopt a new country while practicing their faith unmolested. In France, Britain and the Netherlands, they want to be more equal than anyone else. They want to impose sharia law in London and Paris. Fallaci, as a European, knows this, and is also aware that liberal European governments have a history of caving under pressure.

Yes, she is the European Ann Coulter, and I for one wouldn't have it any other way.

How is that possible, to villify Islam?
