Constitutional Amendment on Marriage Fails
Wednesday, June 07, 2006 WASHINGTON A constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman stalled Wednesday in a 49-48 vote, but conservative backers say they are pleased to have had the vote nonetheless.
"For thousands of years, marriage the union between a man and a woman has been recognized as an essential cornerstone of society. ... We must continue fighting to ensure the Constitution is amended by the will of the people rather than by judicial activism, said Senate Majority leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., after the vote.
A constitutional amendment needs two-thirds votes to pass, but first had to get through the procedural cloture vote, which requires 60 senators to agree to end the debate and move toward final passage.
Shy 11 votes to go to a final debate, few crossed the political aisle to vote against their party's majority position. Republican Sens. John McCain, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Judd Gregg, Arlen Specter, Lincoln Chafee and John Sununu voted against the cloture vote. Democratic Sens. Ben Nelson and Robert Byrd voted for it, as they did in 2004. Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel and Demcratic Sens. Chris Dodd and Jay Rockefeller were absent.
Have you considered the possibility that those who attach importance to issues for reasons other than the immediate impact on their wallets might simply be more sophisticated and forward-thinking than you?
"We are not all from Massachusetts"
So maybe you shouldn't try telling them what to do.
Let the states ban it individually and leave it alone on a national level.

What was your opinion of the Supreme Court decision in Lawrence v Texas? I did not hear people saying that what was law in Texas should stay (or be overturned) in Texas. That was the Supreme Court ruling that has taken the issue of so-called same sex marriage away from the states' jurisdictions.
Isn't there a problem with that? If Utah were to allow polygamy (which they got rid of in order to win statehood) and I lived in Provo and had seven wives, I'd be fine. Utah laws says I can.
What happens when I move to Texas?? Is my marriage recognized by my new home state?
It seems to me that leaving the definition of marriage to the states is a non-starter. This requires a national policy.
Troll...
Liberal activism's most successful power source has been the courts (not counting the MSM and the educational system.) And notice also that Clarence Thomas may be the only justice truly willing to undo bad precedent. On a few moral issues, Scalia will do it, because it pleases him, but only Thomas is willing to go the whole way. And so the courts will go on, seemingly unchecked. A flaw in the system? Is there a systemic fix?
With the volume of "same-sex" marriage litigation currently being pursued by gay groups, the ACLU, and others, I seriously doubt that the states could long resist the federal judiciary if it imposes "same-sex" marriage by decree.
US gay-rights groups claim victory after US switches vote in UN
leave this crap to the states.
Spoken like someone who arrived in the middle of the conversation and just jumped right in.
Actually, they're trying to tell all of us what we should do...
The gay agenda is not a benign one...they are trying to change society all over the US.
Post# 3 shows how they voted...
Good. It was a stupid idea.
In fact, nobody even cares.

Have you seen the op-ed by Mitt Romney, where he states that agitators are now pressing for Parent A and Parent B on Birth Certificates? The words mother and father are "insensitive" to some.
He also states that parents may not opt their children out of learning about same-sex union as part of life in Mass when they are learning to read.
Why do you not care about the future of the American populace, and how they are being propagandized?
The answer to that is so simple it shouldn't have to be said. This is the BEGINNING of it. The end product would be... you going to the store or the park with your son or daughter, and the gays would be so bold by that time they will be kissing in public on a regular basis.
Business owners as myself would be forced to honor their "spouses" insurance benefits and invite them to our Christmas parties while they hold hands at the gathering. If I don't hire them because I don't want to pay benefits to a "spouse" of the same sex.......I get the pants sued off me. Etc etc etc.
Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out.
So you want to see marriage be an institution that is NOT recognized nationally? You can be married in MA, but not married in AZ?
