Westons destroys cake stocks - Millions of cakes destroyed after tampering incidents (Australia)

A major food company has begun destroying 4,000,000 cakes after foreign objects, including a razor blade and sewing needle, were found in some products.

George Weston Foods announced the voluntary recall after foreign objects, including a razor blade and a sewing needle, were found in its Top Taste cakes in Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania.

Spokesman Peter Schutz says more than four million cakes made at the company's Brisbane plant will be buried at several disposal sites.

"The decision was taken with the police," he said.

"We have been able to start destroying the product now because the police have concluded their need to hold it for forensic evidence, so the decision to actually destroy was taken yesterday."

He says the cakes will be buried at a secure site.

"All products, no matter what they were, produced from this site have been destroyed," he said.

"Our focus, of course, now is to get production back and get our employees able to work and looking forward to their future."

Police are still investigating the tampering incidents.

They're burying the cakes and all other products produced at that site? Weird.

There was a lot of talk about the vulnerability of our food supply after 9/11. That seems to have gone away, but I'll go out on a limb and guess the Ausies just learned this the hard way. Muzzies will stop at nothing!

Weird.

What's really weird is 4 million cakes in a country with a population of only 20 million. About every other house in Australia must have a Westboro cake in it...Guess the Aussies hate to cook.

They can't just dump it in a landfill. They can't take the chance that someone will get any of it and eat it. Or just get it, not eat it, and sue.

We have had a few such episodes. It certainly highlights how vulnerable the food supply is in the age of terrorism.
