This year, for the first time, the Macy’s at Downtown Crossing designed a display window to mark Boston Pride, and the window made its debut about two weeks ago, according to Boston Pride president. But as of the morning of June 6 the store removed features from the window, including the Web addresses for Boston Pride and the AIDS Action Committee, apparently in response to complaints from supporters of the anti-gay group Article 8 Alliance.dent Linda DeMarco.

Note what the mayor of Boston had to say:

Menino said a small but vocal group have called City Hall to complain about the Pride flag raising, but he has no intention of bowing to pressure. “They call, but I treat them like they’re a piece of wet paper,” said Menino. “They’ll disappear eventually. I don’t take them very seriously.”

Now that we have taken out the terrorists in Iraq, can we start on the tyrants in Boston.

This is quite surprising. Boston is densely populated with homosexuals, and that demographic wields considerable political clout there ( note Mayor Menino's contemptible kiss up). Yet, a little public outcry was enough to spook corporate interests. A template to dealing with this issue?

For the uninitiated about Boston politics, you can get a quick briefing of Mayor Tom "Mumbles" Menino at Howie Carr's site devoted to the Mayor.

But Macy's owns other chains of department stores like Foley's located in much more conservative areas.

Macy's was getting flak from gays about the demeaning window display. Rightly so, btw.

I think its time we had and ACLU team of lawyers to defend citizens rights who are offended by these public displays of religiously and socially offensive material by our constitutionally elected public officials. That ACLU acronym should stand for, American Constitutional Law Union and be a conservative answer to the communist american civil liberties union.

That "fringe" group Mumbles doesn't take seriously are called Christians. This is the second time that Macy's has turned its back on the people that celebrate the holiday that made it a house hold word in Miracle on 34th St. The representative from Pride Week on WRKO stated that their relationship with Macy's goes back ten years. About the same time when Macy's started removing the word Christmas from the store displays because they didn't want offend the small segment of the population that doesn't celebrate Christmas.
This is the same mayor who raise the Seperatist Gay flag over city hall with one hand while removing the word Christmas fro the Christmas Tree last year with the other.

Everything else aside, I don't get the concept of "gay pride" at all. I am proud to be an American, proud of my personal accomplishments, proud of my family, and proud of my ancestors and their achievements. I even hesitate to express "pride in my heritage" for the sole reason that in my mind it implies that I was somehow responsible for the accomplishments of others. Perhaps gratitude is a better word than pride.

But "pride" in, um, bodily functions? I don't get it, no matter what the function is. (I don't want to even get into straight and gay.) Maybe when I was first toilet trained I felt a sense of achievement, but not since.

To me the concept summons up the image of a college kid who is the winner of a farting contest or something. On top of everything, I get tired of hearing about people's personal stuff all the time. I thought the idea was for people to have their "privacy" and be "left alone."

Sorry. That's my take.

LOL your comment about pride of achievement in toilet training pretty much fits the gay pride situation. Like a child who doesnt know any better they run around going "look what I can do" when nobody really wants to know. Like you, I also thought the whole idea was privacy to be who you are. I guess we both thought wrong on that one.

"Maybe when I was first toilet trained I felt a sense of achievement, but not since. "

:-) :-) Maybe they felt the same sense of pride the same-time they kissed someone of the same sex. Toilet-training is an appropriate analogy.

Yet, a little public outcry was enough to spook corporate interests.

A business cannot afford to lose 50% of its customers. Who would be buying in gayified Macy’s?

Boston is densely populated with homosexuals

They are still a small minority.

Did you notice that both Bay Windows and Freep changed the title from "How much is that Faggot in the Window?" to its new title?

That is mighty peculiar.
