I'd rather be giving awards to good actors in bad films rather than bad actors in good films or bad films. If you wish to see an excellent film in which he gave an Oscar-calibre performance (which was far better than what got him an Oscar with "The Untouchables"), see "The Offence." The scenes between Connery and the late Ian Bannen (who also similarly should've gotten an Oscar) were riveting. I look at films like that and see why he is rightly being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

That was one of his very best parts and a good movie. I guess I just think a Lifetime Achievment Award should be given out almost reluctantly, and only to those who really earn it with a lifetime of achievment in their craft--you know, making the award MEAN something. Orson Welles made some bad movies, but his good ones were so revolutionary, so influential, that he deserved every award he got. Jimmy Stewart was in so many good movies. Even George Lucas deserved one for his influence on technology, which will be felt for decades. Stacked up against those winners, I just don't see this.
Though I repeat I think Connery is a good actor, and one I enjoy, it's as much about his personality than anything else. He's never revolutionized acting in films as Brando did, or even introduced a completely new type like DeNiro or Hoffman. But people like giving out awards, so there ya go.
BTW, one of my favorites of his roles is one most people hated--Marnie. He plays a real SOB yet he's the protagonist. Also, The Man Who Would be King is one of the least-appreciated great adventures--actors never get recognized for those kinds of roles but they're probably harder to act than some contemporary drama. He was also very good in Robin and Marion, The Untouchables, and Finding Forester.
How about "The Name of the Rose"? I thought he was pretty good in that and a great movie, too.
