THE GITMO SUICIDES
NY Post ^ | 6/13/06 | NY Post Editorial board

The State Department yesterday distanced itself from an assistant secretary's weekend assertion that the three detainee suicides at Guantanamo Bay constituted "a great PR move." OK, that assessment may seem callous - but why is it so difficult to believe? Longtime critics of the U.S. prison facility on Gitmo - which is to say, reflexive foes of the War on Terror - claim the suicides were the inevitable result of "despair," due to prolonged detention under harsh conditions.

But other factors are at work here. As Rear Adm. Harry Harris, the Gitmo commander, noted, we're talking about people who "have no regard for human life, neither ours nor their own."

People who comprise the ranks of suicide bombers, willing joyfully to sacrifice their own young lives, or take thousands of innocent lives, as they did on 9/11, to further their warped ideology.

Indeed, the three dead detainees all have serious links to terrorism, according to the Pentagon.

To wit:

Ali Abdullah Achmed, a Yemeni, was a "mid- to high-level al Qaeda operative" with close ties to terrorist honcho Abu al-Zubaydah, who has since been captured.

Turki al-Habardi, a Saudi, was a member of a splinter group that recruits for al Qaeda.

Yasser Talal Abdullah Yahya al-Zahrani, another Saudi, was "a frontline Taliban fighter" who took part in a notorious prison uprising in Afghanistan during which a CIA officer was murdered.

Given their extensive records, there is little reason to doubt that such people would be more than willing to lay down their lives to further the jihadi cause.

As Adm. Harris put it: "I believe this was not an act of desperation, but an act of asymmetric warfare against us" by would-be martyrs who have almost no weapons left with which to wage war against America.

They should issue ropes for each cell in Gitmo, why ruin good bedsheets.

The alternative to Gitmo is to shoot them immediately upon capture. They are illegal combatants in a war on the West.

The oddity is that it took so long for a suicide to happen. Those folks were down there because we wanted to milk their brains, they couldn't have been obtuse to that.

an act of asymmetric warfare against us....

It's a short trip from Gitmo to Georgetown. Or from Falluja.

One reason to hope that many more may take it. The problem with suicidial people and cultures, is the damage they do before they die.

Their brains stopped lactating years ago. Someone correctly determined that a "catch and release" policy would mean that most would almost immediately try to kill innocent people, or worse, become exemplars to similarly deranged individuals.

Gitmo suicides. Just doin' the killin' that the American MSM won't let Americans do.

I can't understand how some portion of this country has forgotten how a war is won; by killing the enemy until there aren't any more left or they're so demoralized they just won't fight. Yes, I said it, killing the enemy and in very large numbers. No Gitmo, no Koran's, no three squares a day.

I'd love to see one of these whack jobs stand up and say outright how wars should be fought. Perhaps with blue helments and flowers instead of guns. I swear these people are certifiable.

I would like to see ALL these idiots actually FIGHT a war in the manner they think it should be fought.

Stupid should hurt, and this kind of thinking should hurt a LOT!

One of the funniest things I ever read was when the family claimed these guys wouldnt commit suicide because it was against their religion. Now i dont care what you say in light of thousands signing up for Suicide school thats some funny stuff.

"ALL these idiots actually FIGHT a war in the manner they think it should be fought."

Ding! We have a winner! Excellent idea.

Sometimes I think that at least some of them would be as brutal as Uncle Joe given the chance and the rest are just useful idiots and then other times I think they're all just outright loons.

But it would be "fun" to see 'em do whatever it is that they think should be done and get shot at (or shot, or blown up or whatever).

Or maybe they think if it's bombing from a zillion feet and one can't see the bodies it's all okay.

Damn if I can figure them out but it seems like we've been fighting with one arm tied behind our backs since Korea.

prolonged detention under harsh conditions

HELLO?! If being at Gitmo was fun, every bloodthirsty terrorist would want to go there.

Only one arm? Seems that since Vietnam, they want us to fight with both arms and legs bound, no ammo in the gun and no gun....

Get a group of less-than-rational people together & who's surprised when a few of those individuals decide to cash their chips?

I swear these people are certifiable.

No, they know exactly what they are doing. They are using our laws and our values to destroy us. That is their goal, not the success of the USA. They usually also find a way for us to pay them to do it.

The very fact that "Longtime critics of the U.S. prison facility on Gitmo" know the suicides occurred mocks their arguments.

So-called critics are just the ambulance chasers who want to charge us a million dollars each to defend these guys in court. They have completely tied the government's hands with all of their lawsuits.

They are like that due to repressed guilt. It eases their conscience to perceive themselves as harmless.

The problem is, these are the sort of memes the terrorists despise.

As far as I can tell, the only problem with the suicides is that there were TOO FEW.
