Scientists respond to Gore's warnings of climate catastrophe
Canada Free Press ^ | onday, June 12, 2006 | Tom Harris

Posted on 06/14/2006 5:40:56 AM PDT by E. Pluribus Unum

"Scientists have an independent obligation to respect and present the truth as they see it," Al Gore sensibly asserts in his film "An Inconvenient Truth", showing at Cumberland 4 Cinemas in Toronto since Jun 2. With that outlook in mind, what do world climate experts actually think about the science of his movie?

Professor Bob Carter of the Marine Geophysical Laboratory at James Cook University, in Australia gives what, for many Canadians, is a surprising assessment: "Gore's circumstantial arguments are so weak that they are pathetic. It is simply incredible that they, and his film, are commanding public attention."

Carter does not pull his punches about Gore's activism, "The man is an embarrassment to US science and its many fine practitioners, a lot of whom know (but feel unable to state publicly) that his propaganda crusade is mostly based on junk science."

What gets me about Gore is that he thinks he's a man of science (i.e. invented the internet) and flunked out of two schools.

Wonder what he thinks about man-eating Pliocene clams?

It's wonderful to see articles like this one, too bad the only time US citizens will see it is on FR or similar sites. The MSM will never show it to the public as it does not fit their template of bad news about conservatives and this president in general. Of all the junk science out there (and there is alot) this is probably the most insidious. The only solution offered is the one which increases the slow march to socialism and the gutting of the free market/capitolist system of western democracies. Sadly enough, with the attention of the MSM and Hollywierd, the average person without the motivation to do even a little independent research is now firmly convinced that Gore's hypotheses are not only correct, they are fact, and that should scare us all!

Appearing before the Commons Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development last year, Carleton University paleoclimatologist Professor Tim Patterson testified, "There is no meaningful correlation between CO2 levels and Earth's temperature over this [geologic] time frame. In fact, when CO2 levels were over ten times higher than they are now, about 450 million years ago, the planet was in the depths of the absolute coldest period in the last half billion years." Patterson asked the committee, "On the basis of this evidence, how could anyone still believe that the recent relatively small increase in CO2 levels would be the major cause of the past century's modest warming?"

Debunking the "greenhouse gas" malarkey is a slam dunk in light of this FACT.

But we all know global warming is not about science, it's about finding any possible excuse to implement the discredited socialist agenda.

Why, it makes one wonder who was burning all those fossil fuels way back then.

Perhaps Al "the bore" Gore will answer that one, should we find anyone to ask him.

Yup, I agree. The press is chanting "there is no debate", which is ironic. There's no debate in the press, for sure- none is allowed.

As for people seeing the article, I'll send it to my email tree so at least a few will be exposed to it.

If everyone did the same then competing ideas will spread.

The on going debate about Climate Change and Global Warming is fashionable rather than rational; a ‘cause célèbre’ if you will. If one studies climate from the Miocene era through the all the ‘cene’ history, it is patently absurd that man has had much of an effect on the weather or that man could control the weather. Such a conceit is utterly foolish.

Gore reminds me of Henny-penny and John McCain must be Cocky-locky with their entourage of Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey, Turkey-lurkey, and I guess the United Nations is represented by Foxy-woxy……and Foxy-woxy gets the gold while the other nits lose all credibility in this real world…..all might as well attack and try to stop the Contenintal Drift……………………hey John, climate change is a natural phenomenon; are you sure you want to follow this crowd of idiots?

Among experts who actually examine the causes of change on a global scale, many concentrate their research on designing and enhancing computer models of hypothetical futures. "These models have been consistently wrong in all their scenarios," asserts Ball. "Since modelers concede computer outputs are not "predictions" but are in fact merely scenarios, they are negligent in letting policy-makers and the public think they are actually making forecasts."

Not one of these models has ever been validated. Ever.

John Stossel brought this out awhile back and was pooh poohed. No common sense argument will reach past the propaganda network that has been constructed to take your SUV. The funniest thing he said was "We can't rely on weather forecasts a week from now, so why do we rely on this junk science 10-100 years from now". The computer models have been proven wrong time and time again, no matter what parameters are put in at the beginning.

One of the most obvious questions I wish someone would ask is How long have the glaciers been melting, and what made them start melting 100k years ago if the Suburban was just a cave man's pipe dream. It must have been the R12 he was spewing into the atmosphere.

I agree with Rush. He said "How arrogant we are to think that we could affect changes in the planet." Planet change comes from things we have no control over. We cannot affect Earth tilt, sunspots, volcanic activity, magnetic pole movement, etc. Those are the things that change our climate, not using your SUV to tow your RV to the lake. If you drill far enough, you will get the real answers from the eco-wacko's. They want you dead. They want your children dead. If they can't abort you, then you must pay more tax to the greater good of the collective. You must have less garbage, breathe less, use less, and have the smallest "carbon footprint" possible. They were raised on books like "The Population Bomb", and "Silent Spring" And they dream of the day when half of the Earth's people are dead.

The enemy Democrat Party is agenda driven.

As a Marxist Socialist entity, they will do anything and everything to turn this republic into a decadent, aimless, wondering, subserviant society that they are able to rule over and dictate to, as they desire.

The evidence is overwhelming that the Democrat Party is an enemy of ...

The U.S. Constitution

The rule of law

Morality

Personal responsibility

Honest debate

They (Democrat Party) would rather we have a thousand 9/11's, while blaming others, than unite with the present administration and do the right thing for this country. They are the definition of vermin and should be treated as such.
We, as a nation, have been weakened almost to the point that the Europeans have.

The time has come to remove the Democrats completely, either at the ballot box, or by other means.

We can do it now, or evolve into a third world country and pray that men like our Founding Fathers will come again.

Is your point that man-made global warming is a fraud or that Al Gore overstates the case because he does not report all aspects of the story, including the views of scientists disagreeing with him? In either case, the article you linked to also overstates the case against man-made global warming. In fact, at least some highly qualified scientists think man-made global warming is a serious problem.

Ohio State University Professor of Geological Sciences, Lonnie Thompson, recognized as a leader in his field, predicts the loss of glaciers and ice caps in Africa and Peru within the next 15 years due to global warming.

Sir Nicholas Shackleton, a geologist who has made fundamental contributions to Quaternary paleoclimatology and palaeoceanography, also warns against climate change (i.e., global warming) caused by carbon emissions; if you want to know what "Quaternary " means, you have to follow the link and read the article.

Lamont-Doherty (Columbia University) paleoclimatologist, George Kukla, maintains that the Earth's orbit around the Sun is the primary force behind ice age glaciation; in fact, it is possible that human induced global warming could hasten another ice age by exacerbating the temperature difference between the temperate regions and the polar regions and increasing the rate of water transport poleward.

Lamont-Doherty (Columbia University), PETER B. DEMENOCAL, an associate professor of earth and environmental sciences, who serves on the steering committees for the National Science Foundation, American Geophysical Union, and the National Academy of Sciences, discusses his view on the effects of global warming.

One thing seems certain to me, willful ignorance does not make for good public policy.

Nope. None of these "eminent" scientists can answer even the most basic of questions.
1) If huge glaciers covered the US During the Ice Age creating the Great Plains with their pressure, how come then, did dry land appear when the earth warmed? Shouldn't the earth have been covered deeper in water per GW alarmists? If water takes up more space when it is in the frozen state, doesn't it make sense that it would make MORE land appear when it melts?
2) How can we possibly even use data taken from 100 years ago and compare it to ANY measurement today? Just how many satellite photos, oceanic weather balloons, and digital thermometers accurate to 1/100 of a degree were they using in 1880?
3) In the 70's we were taught in school about the new Ice Age we were entering. Evidence? The Blizzards of '77 and '78 especially. The scientists then were analyzing the data THEY had of past temperatures and came to this conclusion. Now supposedly the earth is warming. This means that there logically was a time when the earth was "just right" between 1975 and about 1990. Also to prove warming today, all of the "cooling" data must have been couteracted by warming data, and it had to have been since the mid 1970's. So, I forgot, was it the summer of 1985 or 1986 that we were having those 300 degree highs? Were the 1970's scientists liars?
4)Since anyone who dares question GW is obviously an oil industry shill, hwhy is it that the proponents of a "solution" for GW are 99% anti-industry, anti-progress, anti-American, anti-capitalist? Is this just a coincidence?

You have been pinged because of your interest in environmentalism, alarmist wackos, mainstream media doomsday hype, and other issues pertaining to global warming. Freep-mail me to get on or off. Please ping me to all note-worthy threads on global warming.

But surely Carter is merely part of what most people regard as a tiny cadre of "climate change skeptics" who disagree with the "vast majority of scientists" Gore cites?

No; Carter is one of hundreds of highly qualified non-governmental, non-industry, non-lobby group climate experts who contest the hypothesis that human emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) are causing significant global climate change.
