Two major issues were used by the President in the run up to war with Iraq. One was the WMD issue and the other was Iraq's support for Al Qaeda.
Since the war began in March 2003, the Democrats and media have repeatedly lied to the American public that Saddam didn't have a relationship with Al Qaeda or Osama bin Laden. They have been permitted to lie without challenge by Congressional Republicans or the President or his administration.
It is well past time that we educate Republican Congressmen and the conservative media, and try to encourage Tony Snow and Karl Rove on the importance of not letting this lie go unchallenged.
Since the 1990's, the media wrote dozens and dozens of articles about the world's alarm at the growing relationship Saddam and Iraqi military officers had with Al Qaeda and bin Laden. In the next post, I will detail some of those links.
Additionally, our very own freeper, translator and national treasure, jveritas, has translated documents which show that Saddam had direct ties to the Taliban in Afghanistan.
It is my firm belief that if more Americans knew about the relationships discussed above, support for the war and our beloved military would increase substantially. The media has gotten away with this lie for long enough.
I am looking for specific suggestions on how to get the word out to the administration with the suggestion they use this evidence of a relationship between Saddam and the jihadists more often, and how to directly write or call our Congressmen, the media, Ken Mehlman as Chair of the GOP, talk radio hosts, etc.

Very good, Ali! I'd like to send this to every Republican in Congress and tell them to educate themselves and grow a spine for crying out loud.
The least the members of Congress can do is defend the mission, the military, their own party and their president.
It seems like that's asking too much these days.

One of the myths that I debunk in that post is the canard that we "armed" saddam hussein's army. Supposedly we gave him all those soviet designed arms. ;-]
As anyone with even a cursory knowledge of military equipment knows, 70 percent of Saddams military equipment was manufactured in the Soviet Union or one of its former Pact countries. Most of the rest was French made stuff.
I've argued that point a time or two in our local paper; I don't know how these urban myths start but the administration probably should have a better PR campaign.
At the least, if the WH doesn't want to attend to these pesky details, they need Ken Mehlman or some point person who can attend to the urban myths that surround the war.

In regards to the Iraqi intelligence documents that discussed Al Zarqawi presence in Iraq, as posted on the Foreign Miliarty Services Office (FMSO) website (document ISGZ-2004-019920 ) it appears that the some in the Iraqi intelligence apparatus provided the accurate information about Zarqawi presence in Iraq with attached pictures of him, but when the information reached the Director or a Director of the Iraqi intelligence he dismissed it as not accurate. This is interesting since it seems there was an intended cover up by this top Iraqi Intelligence officer about the presence of Zarqawi in Iraq despite the much stronger evidence that he was already in Iraq.
I am posting below the translation of the FMSO document ISGZ-2004-019920 and I will make it in a chronological order and please note that I put illegible word(s) when the word(s) in the pdf document is(are) very blur and cannot be read with accuracy and that it is hand writing documents and not printed so it make difficult to read some of the words:
Page 7 of the pdf document: This is a letter from an Iraqi intelligence officer dated August/7/2002 (7/8/2002 per Iraqi date numbering system) talking about the presence of individuals from Al Qaeda inside Iraq and that they possess multiple passports. The has attached pictures of Ahmad Fadil Nazal AlKhalayla that we know him by his nick name of Zarqawi (Abu Musaab Al Zarqawi) and some other individual.

Page 4, 5, and 6 of the pdf document were the attachments that the Iraqi intelligence officer attached to his letter and it contain pictures of two individuals and one of them ispage Ahmad Fadil Nazal AlKhalayla or better know to us a Zarqawi (pages 4 and 5).
Page 8 is very illegible, page 9 is almost blank with a foot note saying “Regarding the possibility of Al Qaeda individuals entering the country”, and page 10 is a blank cover letter with no writing on it ( On the right hand corner it is written “ The Iraqi Republic Presidency of the Republic, Intelligence Service).
Page 2: This a letter from intelligence officer R.K dated on 17/8/2002 asking the Director to review the information in the letter from I.M 53/1/5 (Letter posted, translation of page 7) because they (R.K group) claim that do not have any indication of the existence of such individuals of Al Qaeda in Iraq.

Please review regarding the letter of M 53/1/5 3387 in 7/8/2002. Upon further inspection of the information in it, we have no indication about this and therefore we suggest answering M 53. With regards

The “it” in the above refer to letter of M 53 and the “this” refer to the information about Al Qaeda members entering Iraq.
Page 3 is a reply to the letter of R.K from the Director Ismail Mohamad (Initial M.I or I.M) and basically it says that after they inspected the content of the letter from M 53 they found no indication of the existence of these individuals within the public.

It seems to me that the lower branch of the Iraqi intelligence provided accurate information about the presence of Zarqawi and AL Qaeda members in Iraq but for some reason it was quickly dismissed by another higher branch in the intelligence service as if they want to cover this up and not follow through on it.

March 17, 2006: Declassified documents from Iraq show 3,000 Saudi and Iraqi mujihideen depart Iraq in Nov 2001 to fight US in Afghanistan
The newly declassified documents shed more and more light on the evolution of the violent insurgency in Iraq, and show that Saddam Hussein’s government was aware not just of the presence of Al Qaeda terrorist Abu Mus’ab Al Zarqawi, but also was aware that the Anbar province in Iraq was being used as a launch point for organized groups of jihadis headed to fight the United States in Afghanistan.
The document, addressed to the Security Board, Fedayeen Saddam at the office of the Presidency in Iraq, reports what it describes as a “rumor”, says:
there is a group of Iraqi and Saudi Arabians numbering around 3,000 who have gone in an unofficial capacity to Afghanistan and have joined the mujahidin to fight with and aid them in defeating the American Zionist Imperialist attack
This clearly indicates that Iraq was being used as a transit point or launch point for Saudi Arabian jihadis, as well as Iraqis, who wanted to go join the forces of Osama Bin Laden in Iraq in November 2001, nearly a year and a half before the US and Coalition forces commenced military action against Saddam Hussein’s regime.
The sheer volume of “mujahideen” that reportedly departed from the Anbar province, combined with the presence of Zarqawi in Iraq, indicates the presence of an organized Al Qaeda infrastructure within Iraq just a few months after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
The Anbar province is Iraq’s largest province and is located east and southeast of Baghdad. Anbar borders the neighboring states of Jordan, Syria, and Saudi Arabia, making it a popular transit point for the insurgents moving in and out of Iraq.

By the way, I have been wanting to contact JVeritas to confirm whether he is confident the word "rumor" is translated correctly. I may do so now and will let you know what I turn up.
Funny I should have seen your thread today. It was exceptionally timely for me. I found myself walking into a knockdown dragout discussion, totally unintentionally, with a couple of lib coworkers vs. a conservative compadre just after I had printed off your thread starter. Needless to say, after I'd read off several of the first entries you had from the NYSlimes and the 'Toons' Justice Department, they were astonished... totally in denial... and trying to change the subject.
This is going to come in extremely handy in the months to come.
