White House endorses Cannon
Deseret Morning News(Utah) ^ | 6/19/06

PROVO — Laura Bush is campaigning for Utah Congressman Chris Cannon. With both Cannon and challenger John Jacob poised to release television ads, the first lady recorded a phone message last week asking Republicans in Utah's 3rd District to vote for Cannon in the party's June 27 primary. "We need Chris in Congress so he can continue securing our borders, protecting our families and helping make the president's tax relief permanent," Bush said in the message, which hasn't been released yet

Word of the White House endorsement leaked to the Jacob camp over the weekend through a Republican Party channel. "The president apparently is going to come out to support Chris," Jacob said Sunday during a debate on KUTV. The first lady could be a powerful ally among Republicans in Utah, where President Bush's approval ratings are higher than nearly anywhere else in the nation. He had a 65 percent approval rating last month among voters registered in the 3rd District, according to a poll done by Dan Jones & Associates

"My guess is she's over 70 percent," Jones said Sunday. "That will help Cannon. How much, we really don't know. Sometimes you can really translate popularity and sometimes you can't." A White House endorsement is rare in aprimary, Jones said. "It's unusual for the White House or influential members of Congress to get involved in the primary election of a state Congressional district." Jacob campaign consultant Hayden Hill called the move a sign the race is tightening. "Obviously (Cannon) knows he's vulnerable, and he's bringing out the big guns," Hill said. The first lady's message is a part of a Cannon campaign strategy to record dozens of local leaders and use the recordings in phone calls to likely voters. Bush's message will go to a broader range of potential voters. The first lady's message is short, and campaign manager Nathan Rathbun said the Cannon campaign has not decided when to start dialing up phone numbers with it.

"We love immigrants in Utah. And we don't oftentimes make the distinction between legal and illegal. In fact I think Utah was the first state in the country to legislate the ability to get a drivers license based on the matricula consular and of that I am proud."

Did you actually hear Cannon say this, or could his words have been taken out of context?

Don't really know if he said it but if he did it can't really be taking out of context, it's just like the lady in California that said you don't need papers to vote, when you said it you said it.

And after Chris Cannon gets his way and 60,000.000 million Mexicans come into this country and vote Democrat and there are 9 left Justices on the Supreme court how good do you think your Second amendment "rights" will be? I think the NRA is crazy to endorse Cannon.

I thought Presidents and others did not get involved in PRIMARY RACES.
They must be scared that this will be a vote against the Bush immigration bill.

Hey Dane, are u getting nervous yet. If your boy goes down, it will be for only one reason...immigration. Then you and the rest of the liars, will be proven wrong. You should be getting used to it though. You were wrong about Miers.
You were wrong about the Dubia Port deal. And you may end up being wrong about Cannon.

They don't have a choice at this point if they want to save their amnesty bill.

What happened in San Diego proved that.

Since the White House seems firnly behind Cannon, I wonder why Bush dis not make an appearance with Cannon when he was in the neighborhood last week.
(Bush went to NM)

Do u think that they thought Bush's appearance in Utah would remind GOP voters of the amnesty bill, especially since Cannon is running away from his moderate position on nimmigration.

Me thinks so.

The president has become a liability from a support standpoint and would most likely erode support for Cannon were he to appear with him.

The first lady, on the other hand, is just the opposite.

What seems to have been lost in this thread is who is the better man - Cannon or Jacob? Jacob is a real estate developer, detested in his home town, who got the money he is using to fund his campaign via an opportunistic marriage. Jacob is now opportunistically running for congress solely on an anti-immigration platform against a senior Republican, Cannon, who knows everything there is to know about immigration, and refuses to pander to simplistic immigration solutions. To those who know him at all, Jacob is an emotionally unstable egomaniac. It will be very bad for the Republican Party, on several levels, if Jacob wins. We will lose a very good man, and gain a very bad one. (P.S. I contributed to Cannon's campaign.)

Chris Cannon is not a Vicente Fox sycophant, but you keep pushing that lie.

He wasn't pushing that "lie" Dane he was using an example.

Man you are dumber than a pile of crayons.

You're quite ignorant. Presidents always support incumbents from their own party in primaries.
