McCain Campaigns for Liberal Sen. Chafee
NewsMax ^ | 20 June 2006

Arizona Senator John McCain is the latest heavyweight Republican to pitch in for his liberal Rhode Island colleague, Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who now faces a tough primary contest to retain his seat in the Senate.

Chafee - regarded by many conservatives as a typical RINO (Republican in Name Only) - is running in the September 12 GOP primary against Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey, who disagrees with Chafee on the issue of Iraq.

Chafee, who voted against the war, has waffled on the issue of setting a time table for troop withdrawal while Laffey insists that the United States must keep its troops in Iraq until the country is stable and able to defend itself against the terrorists.

And while McCain's position is the same as Chafee's opponent, he went to Rhode Island Saturday to campaign for Chafee, while emphasizing that the United States must not set a deadline for withdrawal. McCain admited that "mistakes have been made in this war," adding " . . . it has lasted much longer than any of us have ever anticipated."

McCain continued in support of Chafee: "The people of this country want us to reach across the aisle and work on the issues that affect the welfare of the nation," McCain said before promising to come back to Rhode Island before the primary election to campaign for Chafee again.

According to the Boston Globe, many Republican leaders consider Chafee their best bet to hold on to the senate seat in what the newspaper described as a heavily Democratic state. Among top Republicans who have appeared in Rhode Island to campaign for Chafee are first lady Laura Bush, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, an actor well-known for his role on the NBC television show "Law & Order."

Other Republicans, however, are bitter over Chafee's anti-war vote and his opposition to such key GOP stands as supporting President Bush's tax cuts and his vote against confirming Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.

Chafee's vulnerablity was highlighted in an April appearance before the Scituate, R.I. Republican Town Committee where he sought the endorsement of what the Washington Post described as "a small but influential group." According to the Post Chafee defended his opposition to the war in Iraq, domestic wiretapping and the confirmation of Justice Alito as the principled positions of an old-school conservative.

The response to his talk, he told the Post was blank stares. "Nobody listened to my reasoning. They support the president on everything."

The next morning the group decided to back Laffey.

Do you think that the revenue that this ad and the floor humper guy ad bring into Newsmax outweighs the loss in credibility?

It can't be more clear that McCain is NOT a conservative, and that he want's to see the conservative influence in congress diminished.

McCain (R-Media) came up here to Maine to campaign for David Emery in the Republican Primary for Governor to run against current Governor Milquetoast. Emery came in 3rd.

Seems like McCain is on a roll!

The NRSC is pouring tons of money into Chaffee's re-election effort. I expect a visit from the President to be next on the agenda.

McCain is a bitter old man who thinks like an aristocrat who has a landed title to govern the din-minishment of the conservative strength of the Republican Party.

As a matter of fact, he and his running dogs have convinced our president to go along with some of their schemes, they now control communication between our president and congress. We need a conservative revolt against these Republican Wigs, who mean to deny the people of a free and fair election in 2008, and are arraying themselves to cut off the conservative tide that elected our current president. Tom DeLay was framed by them while they work to protect POSs lke Jefferson.

I hope we have at least one conservative who makes a run at the republican nomination for the presidency.

Looking for love in too many places
Looking for love in too many faces.

McCain has so jumped the shark. Still, it might be to our interests if he could be convinced to step down from the Senate and run for President. (Quick check, is the Governor of Arizona a Democrat or a Republican.. lol) One has to think ahead at least one step.

McCain is like the Hillary Clinton of the Republican party. The press loves him but his own party is getting to the point of not being able to stay in the same room with him.

Technically, those things are conservative. Old conservatives oppose interventionism and support (to the extreme) privacy rights.

You've about summed it up correctly.

Also, and I'm not making this an immigration thread but it pertains to a certain vitriol lately against challenging pols in primaries and McCain specifically.....

Among those decrying Tancredo for getting involved against an elected Republican incumbent in Utah? Guess what McCainiac has been up to?

http://polipundit.com/wp-comments-popup.php?p=13693&c=1#comments

"State Rep. Richard Chalk (R-Hilton Head), a diehard pro-family conservative and Gingrich ally was challenged in the GOP primary by the liberal Tom Herbkersman, the brother of RINO Bill Herbkersman, a state house rep in the neightboring district.

Hilton Head is the most affluent part of SC and is about 70% GOP. Anyone wanting to run for public office there declares themselves to be Republican and this tends to brings LOTS of RINOS into the Island GOP…including the current Mayor and Town Council.

The RINOS lined up against Chalk as they were unhappy with his pro-family, pro-business votes. Newt Gingrich supported Chalk and McCain and his PAC not only gave the liberal Herbkersman an endorsement but also $$$.

Chalk and the conservatives prevailed 56-44 and is expected to win relection in the fall."

Courtesy of poster Anoynmous on Polipundit.

You are exactly correct McCain and his elected RINO express are trying to destroy conservatives. For people that stated Hillary is worse then McCain? If you ever needed proof how WRONG you were, and how RIGHT we are, this is it. We warned you he was a RINO Trojan horse and he's attempted his sneak attack against conservatives across the country. To my knowledge they've been losing more then not, but it doesn't change the intent. The President for whatever reason has aided this cause in support for Chafee, Specter, Cannon and so on. This is a war and there are only two sides. Conservatism or liberalism. One will define the Party.

The NRSC is pouring tons of money into Chaffee's re-election effort.

And that is precisely why I give zero dollars to the NRSC, the RNC, etc.

Last thing I want is for my bucks to go to McLame, Chafee or Pandsey "One Termer" Graham.

Give directly to the candidate of your choice.

The assumption is Chafee is the best chance for a Republican to get elected in a ultra-lib state, chafee despite being a lib contributes to Republican numbers in the senate which helps in keeping control of the judicial committee.
