Foothill valedictorian criticizes decision to censor her proclamation of faith
Las Vegas Review Journal ^ | 06/17/2006 | Antonio Planas

She knew her speech as valedictorian of Foothill High School would be cut short, but Brittany McComb was determined to tell her fellow graduates what was on her mind and in her heart.

But before she could get to the word in her speech that meant the most to her -- Christ -- her microphone went dead.

The decision to cut short McComb's commencement speech Thursday at The Orleans drew jeers from the nearly 400 graduates and their families that went on for several minutes.

I knew they went after teachers for this sort of thing -- but students?

No free speech unless you agree with the teachers.

She ought to look into one of the conservative legal foundations, her free speech and freedom of religion were impinged upon here.

I wish someone had thought to bring a megaphone to hand the speaker upon this distasteful display of reactionary bedwetting by the school. She could have finished the speech that, by all accounts, the majority wanted to hear.

The ACLU has brainwashed many feeble-minded persons of the liberal persuasion into thinking they have a Right to go about their days shielded from anything they don't want to see or hear...no matter how many others do want to hear it.

"Our legal counsel advised us..."...what, to have your spines surgically removed?

Grr.

Surely Vegas can't be more leftist than Eugene, and there is actual prayer led by an invited member of clergy at nearly all graduations here.

The First Amendment, nearly every word of it, was brutally assaulted at this ceremony in Nevada.

I reckon probably most people don't like what happened but they'll keep voting for the godless communists who put those policies in place.

ACLU, as expected, said that the school did the right thing in censoring the student.

"Before she delivered her commencement speech, McComb met with Foothill administrators, who edited her remarks. It's standard district practice to have graduation speeches vetted before they are read publicly."

And she's surprised because they cut the mike during her speech? She should have made a stink about this BEFORE the commencement ceremony.

FIRE Warns Capitol Hill About Threats to Religious Freedom on Campus

June 19, 2006

Tomorrow, FIRE President Greg Lukianoff will participate in Religious Freedom Day on Capitol Hill by speaking on a panel about religious liberty in the United States. Lukianoff will discuss how universities routinely silence religious opinions on campus and force religious student groups to adopt “nondiscrimination” policies that undermine their freedom of association. Tomorrow’s events are hosted by Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, and also include speakers such as U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, Ambassador John Hanford, and Senators Norm Coleman and Sam Brownback. Tune in to C-SPAN for coverage of the event starting at 9:30 a.m.

If you read the whole article, you'll note it wasn't the teachers who censored Ms. McComb's speech. I suspect most teachers supported her.

Would our reaction be the same if the student was a devout Muslim expressing her devotion to Mohammed and Allah? Just a question.

"Would our reaction be the same if the student was a devout Muslim expressing her devotion to Mohammed and Allah? Just a question."

In that case, all would be forced to listen in the name of diversity and tolerance. Therefore, this would never happen to a Muslim student.

I did answer the question. My answer was that it would never happen to a Muslim.

Mine would. The First amendment means what it means. But the reaction of the school would probably have been 180 degrees different, and the speech would have gone forward unimpeded.

What this school did apparently backfired as this story and her comments have spread nationwide! Her silenced message meant for hundreds has now reached multiple thousands! There is no longer time left for good men and women to do nothing. Nationally idle Christians in positions of power are disgracing the honorable sweat and blood shed by our Founding Fathers. Our future generations depend on us ADULTS to step up to the Constitutional plate instead of remaining idle and comfortable in the dugout!
