Dan Rather accused CBS executives yesterday of not having "lived up to their obligation to allow me to do substantive work there" as the network announced his departure after a 44-year career.
CBS officials heaped praise on the longtime anchor, even as they were ushering him out the door yesterday. Rather, for his part, made clear his frustration with the network for refusing to renew his contract or give him an ample workload at "60 Minutes."

Rather, who anchored the "CBS Evening News" for 24 years, relinquished the post early last year after apologizing for a 2004 story -- based on documents that could not be authenticated -- that charged President Bush had received favorable treatment from the National Guard three decades ago.
McManus would not address whether the botched Guard story, which prompted the resignations of three senior network executives and the firing of Rather's producer, was a factor in CBS's decision to end Rather's career there. On the advice of company lawyers, McManus never met with Rather.

John Hinderaker, a lawyer whose conservative blog raised early questions about the disputed Guard documents, said it was "really indefensible" for Rather to have stood by the story for nearly two weeks. But, he said, "I've got some sympathy for the view that he had a long and distinguished career and that one episode shouldn't negate a lot of years of hard work. I always kind of liked the guy. He was a little quirky, an old-fashioned anchorman."
Rem Rieder, editor of American Journalism Review, said Rather "certainly brought on a lot of his own problems with the National Guard story. But given his long history with CBS and all the work he's done, you just wish there would have been a more graceful way to end this saga....

He had made a huge difference. His fraud on America will serve as a lesson for generations to come.
".....based on documents that could not be authenticated..."
Oh how clever.
Finally! We getting rid of him? Glad to see you go Dan, go reap what you have sown.
Right! Rather could not deliver the defeat of Iraq.
Could not do the damage to America that uncle Walty did.
Fortunately the "Freepers" the new media countered the seditious voices of CBSNBCABCNPR. Wish we'd been around during Walter's day.
It's a new day for freedom of speech and old school socialists like Rather have been foiled.
Hurrah!
"What's the frequency, Kenneth?"
Heard some RumInt that the story which made his bones, that of GI's smoking pot while on patrol in Vietnam, was also "Fake but accurate". The story I heard, from a caller to the David Gold show on WBAP 820 (Dallas) around 9 PM on June 20th, was that Rather supplied the pot, then took the photos. If true, the story wasn't so much fake, as staged. Now I don't know if it's true or not, but it sure rings true with me.
Nice to see a little belated justice in the world.
In ten years he'll be as batty as Cronkite.
He should have been fired years ago when he staged that little protest where he stayed off the set for a few minutes while the news was being broadcast. No one else could have gotten away with that. No one else would have done anything as blatant as that, either.
Is it true that they were whistling 'Anchors Aweigh' when they ushered him out the back door?
Maybe Castro will hire him.
And I'll turn them off just as quickly when he comes on. Dumb move, WTH were they thinking?!?
You really think he can recover that well? That fast?
Most of the news anchors in the MSM think they are influencing public opinion, ethics in journalism is not a issue for them or their fellow libs in their profession.
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA !!!
Will he be doing one of those "paid programming" deals on HDNet like I see early Saturday and Sunday mornings on various cable channels like QVC, Sci-Fi, Travel, etc.?
"Maybe Castro will hire him."
I was thinking of Castro too. Rather could run down to Cuba and interview Castro if he needed work. Or he could run over to North Korea and interview another crazy commie. There's plenty of things to do if he wanted.
