ESTES PARK, Colo. -- A 63-year-old California man faces child abuse and assault charges for allegedly shoving his 6-year-old granddaughter dangerously close to a herd of calving elk and then attacking bystanders who protested his actions.
Estes Park Police Commander Wes Kufeld said Harold Wellsted also faces a charge of second-degree assault for allegedly attacking an officer in the booking room of the jail.
A group of spectators near the Estes Park Visitor's Bureau information center was watching an elk herd Friday morning from behind a fence when a van with a woman, an older man and two young children got out. Despite a sign warning visitors against getting too close to the elk, the family stepped over the fence and approached the elk, which had been gathered on the nearby golf course.
Kufeld said the grandfather then pushed the girl toward the elk to take a picture. She began to cry when one elk reared up.
Kufeld said a 58-year-old woman yelled at Wellsted, which allegedly prompted him to hit her. The suspect also knocked down the woman's 82-year-old father, who had been using a walker.
The family then drove away but witnesses began taking snapshots of the van. Using those photographs, police were able to trace the family to Greeley, where police arrested Wellsted, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

I'm hearing that the Elk are also willing to testify in court.
So, what did the van get out of, exactly?
This kind of writing comes from someone who is paid for it! Pathetic...
Send this moron to anger management classes
As an aside, the Elk are so numerous in Estes Park that they're like giant rats. There are thousands of them wandering around there.
Bah! Tourists!
tourist + moron = touron
(or Democrat-your choice!)
I'm always amazed at how stupid some tourists are when see these animals. Colorado is stuffed with elk, they are everywhere. There is no need to capture a once-in-a-lifetime elk moment with a pic since you will see another 500 of them in 5 minutes.
Elk are very large animals that are skittish and powerful. They can total your car while it's parked. You can imagine what one could do to a 6 year old.
"Wellsted was also wanted on a child abuse warrant out of California, authorities said"
Don't worry, between facing charges for attacking the old people and now having to face a judge in California, this guy is going to get justice that not many of his type get.
Put him in a pen with a large male elk during rut and let him take all the close up photos he wants.
So...let's see the picture...
Actually for the abuse warrent and attacting the people he will probably get 30- days probation but if disturbed or attacted the elk they would lock him up for 10 years :-)

When stupid people think animals are cute...WARNING: DISTURBING VIDEO. |
Some people live their lives so alienated from the natural world that they confuse it with a Disney theme park.
Every year we have idiots, many from California, who hike merrily up the sandstone formations around Sedona, presumably singing "I am a happy wanderer", and then either falling off of a cliff or getting stranded on a ledge and needing to be plucked off by a rescue helicopter because nature didn't design herself for idiots' convenience.
Sheesh!
I'm amazed at how brave (or crazy) some of these tourists are. I've seen them try to get real close to moose in Grand Lake, and I even saw one inch up to within a couple dozen yards of a bear one time.
I'm a biologist but I have to admit I was taken by surprise while walking through some pines near the Madison Junction campground. I had been searching for wild mushrooms and not paying close attention to where I was going. I remember turning around and looking into the eyes of a monster bull elk who was relaxing on the forest floor. We eyed each other from a few feet and I slowly retreated. He just eyed me as a minor disturbance.
Have also been attacked on ice floes by Pacific walrus, - and moose in Jackson Hole. I try to steer clear. They are extremely dangerous.
What does a walrus and Tupperware have in common
They both need a tight seal...
bttt
Then I read this part of the article, "Wellsted was also wanted on a child abuse warrant out of California, authorities said."
Well, that answered my question.
