On the occassions I have gotten close to getting hired (in FL and NC) I have been turned down due to my lack of Spanish.

So in a critical life or death situation the crew chief may have to give orders in TWO languages and serve as translator between crew members. At least in Star Trek everyone spoke English including the Klignons.
