The Foundation OF Real Patriotism

THE FOUNDATION OF REAL PATRIOTISM

This country wasn’t founded by cowering dissenters and godless, faithless individuals who had no clue where there actions would lead them. America was founded by men and women of passion and courage. These people had calculated the cost of their actions and knowing that it could cost them their homes, their fortunes and even their lives they bravely moved forward.

Many of them signed off on the Declaration Of Independence. They believed in a higher power that willed them to move forward. That power was the God of the Bible. They believed that they could, and indeed should establish a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to equality. The Bible served as their guide for the definitions of liberty and equality. Patriotism was a natural by-product of their faith. Patriotism says we have faith in our country. Patriotism says we will defend our country. Patriotism says our freedom and our beliefs are worth fighting for.

No one likes war. Most people don’t seek war. And neither our Founding Fathers nor most modern patriots are warmongers. It is not the intention of Americans to force their way of life on other nations. But when other nations threaten us we will not back down. And when other nations ask for our help in defending their freedom we will not back down. That is patriotism. Patriotism is standing up for what is right. Patriotism says that what we have is worth keeping.

War protesters therefore, in the truest sense are not patriotic. They tear down patriotism. They discourage patriotism. They dishonor the memory of those who have died for the cause they believed in. To protest and try to stop a necessary and just war is not patriotism. Some wars are just. The Second World War was just because the powers of darkness were advancing, not only on our friends, but eventually on us as well. War is ugly. War maims and kills. War alters the lives of innocent men and women. But war, in self-defense, in pursuit of the right cause, in defense of innocent life is justified.

Many people thought the Vietnam war was justified. And many people protested. But this is not Vietnam. And the end result can not and will not be the same. To the protesters I say, you must reconsider your actions. You must realize that those who died believed in what they fought for. You disrespect them and the price they paid by dying for what they believed in. That is disgraceful and not at all patriotic. Putting your political views or personal preferences ahead of patriotism is simply wrong.

Last of all, to think that our enemies will simply lay down their arms because we want them to and refuse to fight is to openly invite more disaster and more suffering. People around the world must know that the United States of America is united and speaks as one voice even if our personal or political preferences are stepped upon from time to time. That is real patriotism. That is what America stands for. And that is why open, adamant protesting is not patriotic!

I always think back to the Maryland 400. They saved Washington's Army ~ allowed them to escape Brooklyn to live to fight another day.

They didn't make it ~ 280 of them didn't.

Many of them were from wealthy and powerful families in MD. Their leader was a Scottish Lord, Lord Sterling, aka William Alexander.

For years and years and years we couldn't understand why all the records we were digging up in our monumental genealogical work had all these folks who had land patents to exercise in the Lower Midwest, but they had not been veterans of the Revolution.

Eventually we found their fathers, brothers, grandbrothers, grandsons and sons had been in the Maryland 400 but they'd paid the ultimate price.

This unit was made up of fellows from Western Maryland, a mountainous area, and Southern Maryland, an area filled with plantations and fishing ventures.

They were united even if no one else was.
