Murtha ABSCAM Video Excerpt
Rush Limbaugh ^ | 2006 | FBI

Posted on 06/24/2006 10:07:09 PM PDT by The Old Hoosier

Someone posted this on another thread, and I just wanted to put this on its own thread so that no one would miss it, and so that it would be easy for everyone to find on FR searching by title (I searched "video" and "Murtha" and "ABSCAM" and didn't find it).

ABSCAM was an early 1980s scandal in which phony Arab businessmen (actually FBI agents) offered cash bribes to several congressmen. Everything was videotaped.

Murtha was among those who was offered money, and he turned it down -- "at this point" -- but clearly was expressing interest at some possible future point. He escaped prosecution only by ratting out two fellow Democrats who had also been implicated. Amazingly, he was re-elected and has been since.

Today, with the Internet, I wonder whether this could be brought back to haunt him in a way it never could contemporaneously. This is a tiny portion of the Murtha bribe-offer video, hosted on Rush's website.

I would love to see Murtha defeated by Irey in the November election.

I hope she gets some help and guidance from GOP headquarters. She already has the "punish Murtha" vote in the district but that won't be enough. She needs to craft a campaign based on a positive alternative for the 12th District, and getting her message out about that won't be easy.

My Enemy's Enemy by George Crile

Excerpt:

It was only the beginning of the extraordinary maneuvers Wilson had to make to push this bill through a highly reluctant Congress. By then even his most reliable ally, John Murtha, the chairman of the Defense Appropriations subcommittee, wanted to end the CIA program. Murtha was appalled at reports of the mujahideen's drug trafficking, but in the end he stood with Charlie, and his support guaranteed the bill's passage in the House. It was passed in the Senate that fall. The secret appropriation was hidden in the $298 billion Defense bill for fiscal year 1992. When it was presented for a vote, no one but the interested few noticed the $200 million earmarked for the Afghans.

And so, as the mujahideen were poised for their thirteenth year of war, instead of being cut off; it turned out to be a banner year. They found themselves with not only a $400 million budget but also with a cornucopia of new weaponry sources that opened up when the United States decided to send the Iraqi weapons captured during the Gulf War to the mujahideen.

Murtha's war record and bogus Purple Hearts are worth going after, but Irey cannot touch it. Maybe the vets4irey? Or there is a group based around book Stolen Valor.

I hope she gets some help and guidance from GOP headquarters.

But she won't get that until she shows she's put together a strong network and significant fundraising. She's made good progress on both, but there's more work to be done.

Hope you'll help keep us posted on specific ways we can help. Her website is impressive--and so is her record as County Commissioner.

Bumping her threads, writing letters to the editors (especially of western PA papers), donating money, donating time to her campaign if you're local, volunteering for a road trip in the late summer/early fall to go help in her district, signing up for and forwarding her campaign E-mails, start your own website supporting her, etc.

Use your imagination! :-)

Good idea! I put together a website a few years ago to tell the story of some guys who served in the 16th Regiment in WW2. Since then, I've added other material as time allows. So I put material on the home page. You can check it out at http://warchronicle.com/
