WASHINGTON - The U.S. population is on target to hit 300 million this fall and it's a good bet the milestone baby — or immigrant — will be Hispanic.
No one will know for sure because the date and time will be just an estimate.
But Latinos — immigrants and those born in this country — are driving the population growth, accounting for almost half the increase last year, more than any other ethnic or racial group.
White non-Hispanics, who make up about two-thirds of the population, accounted for less than one-fifth of the increase.
When the population reached 200 million in 1967, there was no accurate tally of U.S. Hispanics. The first effort to count Hispanics came in the 1970 census, and the results were dubious.
The Census Bureau counted about 9.6 million Latinos, a little less than 5 percent of the population, but the bureau acknowledged that figure was inflated.
In 1967, there were fewer than 10 million people in the U.S. who were born in other countries; that was not even one in 20.
Today, there are 36 million immigrants, about one in eight.
"We were much more of an insular society back then," said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank.
As of early Sunday, there were 299,058,932 people in the United States, according to the Census Bureau's population clock. The estimate is based on annual numbers for births, deaths and immigration, averaged throughout the year.
The 300 millionth person in the U.S. will likely be born — or cross the border — in October, though bureau officials are wary of committing to a particular month because of the subjective nature of the clock.

FRiends, I know exactly where the enemy is, and I know the enemy is inside our nation's borders. I think I've heard it said America must understand these people who would kill us. America must consider the mind of those persons wishing to kill or / and injure millions of Americans and understand why. I don't. When I lived in FL I knew many Cubans who had fled Castro and who were as fine, decent, and patriotic Americans as anyone I know. My mother lived next door to a Cuban family and they became best of Christian friends even though Mom was a lifelong Baptist and they were ardent Catholics.
I also worked with Cuban professionals in FL who worked harder and smarter than many of the native born Americans who worked with them. If you had to compete with those guys for business you had better be sharp.
Not all Latino immigrants are dirt poor Mexican mestizos who live under some of the worst 3rd world poverty level conditions on the planet.
They'll tax and regulate the hapless American into the ground to get their free services. And they'll be no state left to run to either. It's the socialists/democrats dream.

My opinion is there is only a certain amount of money unless our leaders print more, thus inflation. We cannot sustain the entire world and the entire world cannot become a citizen in / of America. The costs will outweigh the benefits, much as we are witnessing now. The people of America are being asked to take are poor and uneducated. America is expected to take 100s of millions of these poor and uneducated and expected to continue building the foundations of a republic. This is simply my opinion; the poor and uneducated will in turn vote and their votes will eventually destroy the treasury. When the treasury is gone, who will refill the treasury? The poor and uneducated will have voted themselves the money, everyone in America will become less able to cope with inflation, and the poor and uneducated will appear to be the intelligent ones for having received something while giving America nothing. The middle class will be hit worse, with all the illegal people now voting themselves the middle class's money. Welcome to the coming reality, unless America decides to do better.

You got that right!! My mothers father, my grandfather, was in the Spanish Merchant Marine, and he jumped ship in Norfolk, Virginia in 1912. He didn't have a social worker waiting for him at the dock, he didn't get (nor would he have taken) food stamps, energy assistance, medicaid, or any other welfare program whose abuse today is threatening to bankrupt the Republic. He was an illegal that got a job as a barber and ended up marrying the owner's daughter.
I understand that breaking the law is breaking the law, but I think it was generally overlooked in the past because we were are growing nation where people came, legal and illegal, and pulled the wagon. Today many (but not all) illegals want to jump into the wagon and have someone else do the pulling. Therein lies the danger, and when you couple that with a shameful political party that is hell bent on conferring victimization status on these millions of illegals, it's a sure prescription for disaster.

Your opinion is right on, I believe the same thing, which is that we're going to be expected to endlessly take in the world's poor and uneducated along with skilled immigrants who'll work cheaper and ultimately displace Americans in those jobs as well.
There's a lot of money to be made in this type of policy in new construction and whatnot but money may only be part of it. There's political reasons for wanting this tidal wave as well along with the do-gooder mentality that somehow says we're responsible for all the world's problems.

It was the same for my grandparents, they came during the Great Wave of the 19th centurty and there was no welfare or social safety net. Either they made it or went back home.
They also were expected to assimilate into the American mainstream.
Mass immigration is the most imporant issue facing the country but all most politicians want to do is maintain the status quo or make it worse. It's very sad when think about it what the future of this country is going to be like for our kids and grandkids.
