The New York Times

September 24, 2001 Monday Late Edition - Final SECTION: Section A; Column 1; Editorial Desk; Pg. 30 LENGTH: 545 words HEADLINE: Finances of Terror

Organizing the hijacking of the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon took significant sums of money. [snip] Washington and its allies must also disable the financial networks used by terrorists.

[snip]

Much more is needed, including stricter regulations, the recruitment of specialized investigators and greater cooperation with foreign banking authorities. There must also must be closer coordination among America's law enforcement, national security and financial regulatory agencies.

[snip]

Though some smaller financial transactions are likely to slip through undetected even after new rules are in place, much of the financing needed for major attacks could dry up.

[snip]

If America is going to wage a new kind of war against terrorism, it must act on all fronts, including the financial one.

I'll be quite surprised if the NYT loses a lot of subscribers over this. And if their advertisers are smart, they will opt out of advertising in the Times.

This would be hilarious if it weren't such a darned serious subject. The NY Times is apparently now upset that the Bush Administration followed its advice through this legal program.

CIA operatives like Plame

In fact, several unnamed anonymous sources in the CIA confirmed that Plame was investigating these very same terrorist money trails before she was outted. /DU-Rumor-mode

The NYT has been revealed for what it is. You'll recall that Keller's adolescent response to criticism included a charge that the Administration mounted only a "half-hearted" attempt to keep them from publishing this treasonous piece. Now John Snow has laid out in his letter to Keller just how extensive the Administration's efforts were. Bill Keller is a liar. If the NYT has any principled shareholders, they ought to be demanding his firing.

Unless the advertisers are happy to aid and abet...

My first act is to cancel my local newspaper subscription. The print media in this country needs the stake if they are going to act in such a blatantly and aggressively anti-American way. I'm not finished there, and want to participate in whatever weapon is used by the people against this enemy.

Furthermore, the hypocrisy of the article is less important than the Times impression of the immediacy of the problem while the dust, debris and bodies of the murdered still lay in the streets of New York. What has changed at the Times since the fear and righteous anger of those days? Why do they hate us? Why have they, of all people in this Nation, forgotten? They were there. I think the answer is cowardice.

The wailing and gnashing of teeth by the Times when we are struck again-- the moaning of why couldn't the government do more to prevent the deaths of thousands more of America's citizens will set my teeth to edge.

They are not in the fight.

The NYT could not know, that soon, just HOW effective this administration would be. IF W had been more like, oh say, Clinton, they could have lambasted him for NOT being effective (kinda like their guy). Their memory is selective. But one of the BEST things about the Times is its never-ending ability to underestimate the American people.

Half-hearted...I chuckled at that one:) Keller is living in a world of his own making- insular and holier-than-thou. I agree- I hope the shareholders and advertisers raise hell with him.

I wonder if a democrat was in the WH would we be seeing these stories, I doubt it. The Times hate Bush more than it is concerned about the safety and security of America. They are more than willing to sacrifice our security if it offers a chance to get Bush. Political bigotry at its worse.

What is so pathetic is the Times was so predictable. I knew they would have written a righteous _Editorial_ in the aftermath of 9-11 beseeching (and blaming) the government about pulling the financial strings of the terrorists. It was simply a matter of finding it.

I had three anded fields in the LexisNexis search: terror and finance and editorial. Limited the publication field to the NYT. Selected 01/01/1991 - 12/31/1991.

Of course it was there.
