Lieberman weighing run as independent

HARTFORD, Conn. - Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman , warily watching his primary challenger advance in the polls, must soon decide whether to start collecting signatures for a possible independent bid this November.

"I am not going to close out any options," the senator recently told reporters.

But any effort to gather signatures before the primary would be a sign of weakness, indicating that Lieberman, the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000, fears that he could lose to businessman Ned Lamont. The effort also would rile Democrats who already question Lieberman‘s party loyalty and his perceived closeness to President Bush .

The senator has been a strong backer of the Iraq war.

"I think he‘ll alienate Democratic voters, but to be honest with you, I think he already has alienated Democratic voters," Kukk said. "If Lamont is gaining ... I think you‘ll see Lieberman jump."

The poll found that if Lieberman runs as an independent, he would win with 56 percent of the vote, compared to 18 percent for Lamont and 8 percent for Republican Alan Schlesinger. Lieberman enjoys higher ratings among Republicans and unaffiliated voters than Democrats, the poll found. Unaffiliated voters are the state‘s largest bloc of voters, followed by Democrats and then Republicans.

"What do you say, Senator?" Lamont asks in the radio ad. "May the best Democrat win."

"If Joe Lieberman is considering abandoning the Democratic Party, the people have a right to know it," Swan said. "Ned is agreeing to abide by the process and respect the choice of the people. Will Joe?"

"I think they are thinking of it," Kukk said of a possible Lieberman independent run. "If you‘re looking for your political survival, you‘d be silly not to."

Well, given how they treat him, he'll be an idiot not to. BTW, why is "antisemitism" among the keywords there? Nothing in the posted article has anything to do with it.

Lieberman might as well run as an independent if he loses. Ned Lamont is far too left-wing for Connecticut citizens in general and can't win the general election anyway.

By the way, I think this poll serves as strong evidence that the whole of the Democratic base has turned hardcore, Kossack, idiotarian left. All the rational Democrat voters have either jumped to the GOP or decided to self-identify as independent.

If I was a Connecticut citizen, I would proudly cast my vote for Lieberman instead of the GOP candidate in November, if there was no chance that the Republican could ever win. As a rational conservative, I consider it far more important to keep a moonbat from obtaining power than to just mindlessly toss a vote to whomever happens to have an (R) after his name.

If they didn't won't vote for him in the primary, what makes you think they're going to vote for him in the general?

Lieberman might as well pull a Zell Miller and bow out gracefully, which would marginalize the Dims more than they are now.

The Democrat party wants to stick a knife in Joe's back, and also a guarantee from Joe that he will not run against them as an Independent because they should be able to screw Joe without consequences.

In the news, the Democrat representatives are saying Joe is more like Frist than reflecting Democrat values.
I think if Joe runs as a Independent and wins, that proves that Democrats left their party to go left, not Joe in going right.

Not at all, but we could get an Independent in Joe that would vote with Republicans far more often because Democrats pissed him off and showed him no loyalty.

Thing is that if Joe wants to go Independent, he has to have 7000 signatures the day after he would have lost the Democrat primary, which leaves him no time to gather signatures if he loses unless he gathers a month before.

He should gather the signatures and keep them on standby.

Maybe not anti-semitism directly, but there are more conservative Democrats out there than Lieberman whom the lefties still support. Makes you wonder why they single out Lieberman....

If they didn't won't vote for him in the primary, what makes you think they're going to vote for him in the general?

Think about the general election.

If you truly believe that the Iraq War is a just cause, would you rather have the Democrat defeatist win or the Republican win?

It boils down to a matter of honor and integrity.

If Lieberman is true to his principles, he will run as an Independent so that the defeatist Democrat will have his Democrat vote split and thereby lose.

OH Yes, John! That's a brilliant idea. Go for it! Go for it BIG! Brilliant, just brilliant! Yes! In my heavily Blue town and county, I'll put up a huge yard sign. Several huge yard signs. And I'll pay for them myself. I promise! Just do it!

Joe, you can be an Indie but please don't come to us. We have enough rinos already. Stay where you are and fight this out. The more people watch what the rat is doing to you, the better for us.

This will surely help Hillary get elected. Lieberman will siphon off more republican votes than democrat votes.

Joe 'Perot' Lieberman.
