Prominent black leaders said they will work to combat Christian conservatives they say have used gay marriage and abortion to distract from larger moral issues such as the war, voting rights, affirmative action and poverty.
The Revs. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Joseph Lowery and hundreds of black leaders from around the country are focusing on mobilizing black voters for the fall elections. They kicked off a three-day black clergy conference Monday in Dallas.
There are no gay people coming to our churches asking to get married, Sharpton said. But there are plenty of people coming with problems voting or their sons in jail. Sharpton said tours are planned of swing states starting in July to bring out black voters and push Democrats to take a tougher stand on social justice issues.

Hey, it gets the demogogues into one corner. Now, where's the Raid?
These aren't moral issues for the church. Who the heck is he kidding?
Specifically aiming criticism at someone based on their race or religion is reprehensible. And the fact that a bunch of "reverends" are doing it tells me a lot about them.
What is the percentage of abortions in America being done on black women? I'll bet it's a huge number. They are aborting their own constituency. How idiotic - and immoral. After all, it's easy to be pro-choice when you're not the one getting killed.
Every time I hear the term "reverend" applied to these "leaders," I feel like puking.
Anyone else see the irony of the chief race-baiters claim that conservatives are using smoke and mirrors? Some might call it hypocrisy.
Good grief! A person would think that these jokers would pick on someone else like Hitlery, Puce, Bubba--oh, wait! these dimocrazies are demoncRATS. Duh!
That's a natural response to utter perversity. I think if we keep recalling they're high priests of the Church of Liberalism, then it doesn't trigger the reflex so quickly: knowing whence they come, we can mentally dispatch the news where it belongs.
I (a white woman) have been listening to Creflo Dollar (a black preacher) for about 15 years. He preaches the Word of God, and incorporates an incredible sense of responsibility and character into each of his sermons. And he NEVER makes charges of racism; he tells about his poor upbrining, and how, with perseverence and faith in God, he has built his ministry.
I wish it was HE that the black community listened to. Jackson and Sharpton are such hacks; they have no business "representing" God on any level.
And yes, I know Pastor Dollar's a Word of Faith preacher. But after 15 years, no one can tell me that $ is what he's about. He uses more Scripture than any preacher I've ever seen. It wouldn't hurt the Reverends Jackson and Sharpton to open the Bible themselves once in a while!
"to distract from larger moral issues such as the war, voting rights, affirmative action and poverty."
None of those issues are more important than gay marriage and abortion, in fact none of them are more important than illegal immigration either.
It's easy to blame conservative Christians instead of fixing real problems, like the increasing breakdown of the black family in America.
"Prominent Black Leaders"
Two words: HOW MUCH?
Gay Marriage is so anathema to Black Clergy that the biggest Black Church in Boston will work against the election of Duval Patrick for Governor.
Don't believe the lie they represent all Black people.

The GOP is wide open and heartily welcomes Blacks to be a vital part of the true conservative movement swelling up in this nation. We want you and need you here. The Dems keep you fear infested...GOP wants you freedom invested.
It's a shame when the play's so bad and the actors don't know when to leave the stage.
"Three Blind Lice"
The pastor from this church has built his church through toil and pain, giving most of his time to heal the broken around him. That's a real reverend.
Calling these money-hungry demagogues "reverends" is almost blasphemous.
