'I'm breathlessly awaiting the NYT report on exactly what this spy satellite does."
Well, it collects information.

Beat the Chumash curse so far.

IKONOS II did as well. Still working fine since 1999.

Been there, done that. Nice to know a fellow Freeper that was at VAFB.

I was at SLC-6 getting the IKONOS II ready for launch. (Athena II)

But 0 for 2 prior to that launch. Here's the story. Tribal Curse Haunts Launch Pad

"One final Athena launch was scheduled for SLC-6: a duplicate of the Ikonos satellite that failed to reach orbit. This time instead of just crossing their fingers and hoping the curse would falter, the launch team decided to do something. According to Ash, the ground crew held a ceremony in which a Chumash priest, hired by Lockheed Martin, asked the gods for forgiveness and to remove the curse. (Lockheed denies such a ceremony took place.) On Sept. 24, 1999 an Athena successfully put the Ikonos satellite into orbit."

Yep, the NRO has been out of the closet for quite a few years now.

NYTimes exclusive.

Bush administration launches new sky-tapping satellite over North Korea and Iran. In a secret launch from Vandenburg Air Force Base in California (a state that isn't New York City) the Bush adminstration has begun yet another program to gather information from American Citizens in North Korea and Iran without warrants.

This represents yet another expansion of Bush's program to infringe on the constitutional rights of American Citizens. The satellite will orbit over North Korea's missile installation starting at 23:15UTC Wednesday and Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities at 23:27UTC Wednesday, returning over each site every 274 minutes for the following 2 years. (see page A16 for a complete chart of the satellite's path and schedule)

The satellite uses optical cameras with a resolution of 3 inches and infrared cameras that can be blinded with a beam of laser light in the 850nm range....

LOL... It's been well over 10 years since they declassified the name of that entity... I still get nervous when someone mentions it and I still can't say it out loud... old habits die hard.

Not my photo, I just linked to it. Maybe between Lompoc and Santa Maria?

It has been almost 20 years since I was there. I found Vandenberg by accident while driving around taking in the sights. Got on this very wide, very straight road in the middle of nowhere, and followed it to a base entrance. I was later told that the road was built to accommodate the Space Shuttle mover.
