Israel turned up the pressure on Palestinian militants to release a captive soldier Wednesday, sending its warplanes to bomb a Hamas training camp after knocking out electricity and water supplies for most of the 1.3 million residents of the Gaza Strip.
The Hamas-led Palestinian government called for a prisoner swap with Israel, saying the Gaza offensive would not secure the soldier's release.
Hamas-affiliated militants holding the hostage previously made that demand, but this was the first time the government did.
Tensions escalated Wednesday evening as the military fired artillery near Gaza City - the first time Israel has targeted that area during the offensive.
It was Israel's first ground offensive since pulling its soldiers and settlers out of Gaza last summer.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Israel would not balk at "extreme action" to bring Cpl. Gilad Shalit, 19, home but did not intend to reoccupy Gaza.

IDF to Gazans: Don't approach Kassam launch sites
IAF planes will distribute flyers on Wednesday night in the Beit Lahia and Beit Hanoun areas in the northern Gaza Strip.
The aim is to warn the residents of the areas that they are endangering their lives by being in the vicinity of Kassam launch sites.
The distribution of the pamphlets is part of the IDF's stepped up action against the firing of the Kassam rockets at southern Israel.

Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.
they don't wash their nasty asses anyway, it should have been cut months,no years ago; let their arab brothers supply their needs
I suppose attacking an Israeli military post, kidnapping for ransom an Israeli citizen and soldier, were just the way the paliSlimeians say hello, welcome to the neighborhood.
You dont invade another country and despoil it without repercussions. Unless you are mezzico or a paliratterrorist!

Have there been any air raid warnings in Israel.

(Love the coding.)
So will the Jewish "settlers" be allowed back in now? If not, what? What does all this mean? If Israel is going to put the Gazan Arabs under siege but doesn't want Jews to live there either, what's the point? Perhaps they'd rather no one lived there at all?
Heeheehee! The opera ain't over yet! I have a feeling the Israelis may very shortly send the fat lady on stage to sing, and the aria she'll sing won't be one the Syrian ferret or the Philistines will like very much!
Hope the IDF haul out the leaders of HAMAS at bayonet point and hang them publically.
"Last summer's disengagement... was a big mistake.
We took the army out of Gaza, we evacuated 25 Jewish settlements and we got nothing in return."
Israel should get something in return.
No one would be better than terrorists.
First, expand the buffer zone so it is harder to dig a tunnel under the wall.
Unless the terrorist leadership is killed, all this is meaningless. The so-called Palestinian so-called civilians don't blame Hamas for their turmoil, they blame Israel, and will continue to do so.
Right on! String them up and let 'em be vulture food!
Would the NY Times be far behind?
