Kerik Reaches Plea Agreement

CBS) NEW YORK CBS 2 has learned that former Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, who's been living under a cloud of accusations, has reached a plea agreement with the Bronx district attorney's office. Kerik will not face criminal charges, but will admit to some wrongdoing. Sources said he is scheduled to appear before a Bronx judge Friday morning.

Kerik, who was facing several possible felony charges, will admit that while serving as New York City Corrections Commissioner he failed to report a personal loan, as required by the city charter, and accepted a gift, a violation of the city administrative code.

The 18-month criminal investigation of Kerik stemmed from allegations concerning the renovations he had done on his Bronx apartment. Investigators alleged that nearly $200,000 in work was performed, but Kerik allegedly paid only $17,000.

According to a complaint filed last year by the New Jersey Casino Control Commission against Interstate Industrial Corporation, most of the renovation was secretly paid for by Interstate, a firm with alleged ties to organized crime. In return, Kerik allegedly vouched for Interstate with city regulators, charges that Kerik and the company's owners denied.

Sources said a Bronx grand jury spent weeks listening to testimony from dozens of witnesses including former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, but in the end sources said the evidence was "just not there."

The administrative violations are considered unclassified misdemeanors and not a violation of state law. As part of the deal, Kerik will have to pay a hefty fine. The Bronx D.A.'s office would not comment on the plea deal. Reached by phone, Kerik would not confirm or deny the deal.

These were misdemeanor crimes so I don't find that he had to pay a hefty fine unusual at all.

I guess there was no evidence. This has been going on a long time - if there was anything they would have charged him.

Whatever else, Bernard Kerik would have been an excellent Homeland Security Chief. These charges and the Hispanic nanny story are just not enough to have eliminated Kerik from that job.

I don't care about this and that, I believe Kerik is a smart, tough, and very forceful man. We shouldn't be looking for a bona fide saint to be protecting our country, we should have someone who has no qualms about getting the job done. Look at FEMA and TSA, just for starters. Does anyone think that Kerik, who ran the cops in NYC under Rudy, would ever have allowed such PC BS to become the SOP?

The terrorists fight dirty. They have no morals when it comes to killing Americans. The sanctimonious politicians and the MSM teamed up to force Kerik out, and he's the one man I can think of who would have gotten this Homeland Security thing right. He's a street fighter, and that is what is needed to fight the sleeper terrorists.
