People are seperated from their kids all the time. A couple of friends of mine attended boarding school from the age of 9 or 10 on.


In a perfect world all the parents are together and the family can survive on a single paycheck. Unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world.

There are a few places(rural towns) where most people could survive on a modest paycheck, but most people would not enjoy living those places.I can't say I blame people for wanting everything.

There are high -- often very high -- paying jobs in cities that have absolutely no application in a small town. These jobs have incredibly narrow bands of expertise. If you're a hedge fund lawyer, for instance, there is absolutely nothing you could do short of working at Wally World in a small town.

People get to choose the lives they lead based on personal priorities. Are some mothers giving up time with their kids for great sums of money? Probably. But I'd wager that far more mothers are giving up time with their kids in order to afford the minimum of a modest house, ten year old car and basic food in the fridge.

The idea of a hedge fund lawyer living in a small west Texas town and working at Wal-mart is making me laugh. Most of them would kill themselves after a week. Small towns aren't always waste lands. Many small town have community colleges. The hedge fund lawyer could get a job teaching English at a small college or working in an office or bank,but he or she still might go insane.

Most poor people would rather live in large cities because of cultural advantages(museums). Small towns can be bland and suffocating unless they are close to a large city. If you are poor and uneducated in a city ,you will be poor in a small town. The only difference is that in a small town everyone is aware of your status. Small children would be better off spending their early childhood in a small town if they are poor ,but as the kids grow older they become all to aware of their low status. This is the main reason people run from small towns.

Hedge fund lawyers -- as a group -- tend to be only slightly more aggressive than fire ants or pit bulls. Like I said, they have incredibly narrow fields of expertise, but they have trained themselves to perform well and wouldn't be happy doing anything else.

There are huge differences between being poor in a small town and poor in the city. Pluses and minuses. Poor kids, who receive a proper diet, tend to be somewhat more healthy. Reminds me of the first time I saw I toddler drinking a Coke from a baby bottle at a county fair -- holy crap!

Everyone is aware of your status in a large city like NY, as well. They just don't know your name or the name of all your cousins and their spouses.

You are right about why people run from small towns. Aside from the major influx of the kids of small town professional class, usually NYC sees what is usually called "trash" with ambition. Nobody in NY cares what side of the tracks you grew up on, they only care if you can do the job better than 99% of everyone else doing the job.
