It may well be that he has told that lie so often he truly believes it himself, but then Kerry has told a lot of lies about Vietnam with a straight face for a lot of years.

I wonder if it wasn't two or three guys with incredibly great senses of humor that convinced him that he was on a secret mission, that he was really in Cambodia, and that he actually had some purpose to crow about there... all so they could mock him mercilessly whenever he would (predictably) strut around about it. You just know that there were more than a few good guys in-country who really did not like that twit.
