Corzine Expected To Order Shutdown As N.J. Budget Talks Falter
AP/NBC 10 ^ | June 30, 2006

TRENTON, N.J. -- New Jersey lurched into a financial crisis Friday as the midnight deadline to adopt a budget neared and a dispute over the governor's plan to increase the sales tax remained unresolved.

Gov. Jon S. Corzine was expected Saturday morning to order an unprecedented state government shutdown after an hourlong meeting Friday night between Corzine and top legislative officials ended without agreement and significant differences remaining.

"Over the last several days the administration has worked on contingency plans for the orderly shutdown of state government," Corzine spokesman Anthony Coley said. "At this time, it looks like we may well be forced to implement those contingencies."

Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts Jr., D-Camden, who is leading opposition to Corzine's sales tax increase, had harsh words for Corzine, charging him with trying to "strong-arm a tax increase upon the citizens of this state."

We've reached the crisis point, and all because the governor is more interested in imposing a shutdown instead of reaching an agreement that would make a sales tax increase unnecessary," Roberts said. "We consider this threat of a shutdown to be both unconscionable and indefensible."

Senate President Richard J. Codey headed home after the meeting with Corzine, which Coley described as "a frank discussion."

"We're working hard on a solution," said Codey, who supports Corzine's budget plan. "There's a lot of ideas, more ideas than Heinz has got pickles, and we're trying like the Dickens to find the ultimate solution."

Hi All-

The guy was able to run Goldman Sachs years ago, but he should have left the state of New Jersey to people with better public sector experience. Aside from being a soft-on-crime liberal he is just a nightmare of a politician. As stated before, he might get a Republican elected yet!

p.s. RINOs don't count!

I'm just not able to feel sorry for the poor citizens of New Jersey. They love their liberal politicians so they should live with the consequences. Hopefully a large tax increase can resolve all the state budget problems.

Well if you can think of a great campaign slogan to attract the dead to our party, we are all ears.

Tell me again why Corzine wanted this job so much to give up a Senator's job? Kay Bailey Hutchinson almost made the same mistake although I can understand her situation a little better - who wouldn't rather live in Austin than D.C.?

Hi Hamilcar_Barca:

Technically speaking, the people of Essex, Hudson, Camden, Union, and a few other urban counties like their liberal politicians. Venture westward into Warren, Sussex, Morris, and a handful of other locations and you'll find them to be deep-red Republican in nature.

That would be Torricelli. He encouraged Corzine to run after The Torch got in trouble for taking monies and gifts from David Chang.

HeHe. Can't think of one now. You have to understand I live under liberal rule with Lieberman and Dodd. Dodd sent out a news alert on email with a loving photo of his wife and little baby and a toddler. Guess now he Presidential material! I think Dodd is early 60's years old and was married in the last 10 yrs. boy, is he making up for past mistakes.
But to get back to NJ- you poor suckers. At least we have a Republican Governor who is helpless.
