So government wants to be the all powerful arbiter of what is good and clean and healthy, and punish you for deviating. Government is pure, and it can administer your healthcare with no problem. Some on the left even go so far as to say that government is the only one who can decide what's healthy and do so in our best interest. But then government wants to also force a foreign morality down your throat in gay marriage. Which, nobody that I've ever seen has made the case that what one man does to another man's body is healthy....

At a meeting last month, LGBT and immigration activists urged U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez to include protections for same-sex partners in immigration reform legislation he plans to introduce in the House of Representatives. Although no promises were made at the meeting, according to Association of Latino Men for Action ( ALMA ) President Julio Rodriguez, community members plan to "continue to dialogue" with the congressman regarding the issue. Gutierrez represents Illinois' 4th District, which includes portions of Chicago's North and South sides. President Barack Obama signaled his intention to tackle major immigration reform as part of his first-term agenda; as...

A recent Harvard Law School graduate has been accused of setting fire to a New York City chapel that houses the remains of unidentified victims of the 9/11 attacks, leading to public outrage from the victims’ families. Classmates of Schroeder at the Law School contacted by The Crimson either did not return repeated requests for comment or declined to comment. But according to media reports the act surprised those who know Schroeder, who served as co-president of Lambda, the school’s LGBT student organization, during his time as a student.

"These ideals, when voiced by generations of citizens, are what made it possible for me to stand here today. These ideals are what made it possible for the people in this room to live freely and openly when for most of history that would have been inconceivable. That is the promise of America. That is the promise we are called to fulfill. And day by day, law by law, mind by changing mind, that is the promise we are fulfilling." – President Obama, HRC National Dinner, October 10, 2009 I came to work in the White House because I thought...

I found this while stumbling. Forgive me if it is a repost. The link below is a letter written from a Christian minister named Bruce Lowe. He graduated from the University of Arkadelphia, Arkansas in 1936. He is now a staunch defender of LGBT rights and has delineated a biblical justification for homosexual acceptance. He encourages equality before the law as well as equality within the church. Here is the introduction to his letter. Every LGBTQQ Christian should take the time to read his words. I think it will make a lot of you feel a little bit better. (The...

Experimental Living by: Deborah Lambert, August 14, 2009 A new dorm room policy allowing male and female students to share the same dorm room is gradually becoming more accepted on our nation’s campuses. At the University of Chicago, two 19-year-old students, Charlie Barlow and Lauren Danzig will be rooming together this fall under the new policy. The duo apparently is not romantically involved, says Lauren, who explained to the Chicago Sun Times that while she has a boyfriend on campus, she chose to live with Charlie because she gets along better with men. The Seattle native says her parents are...

The Buck Stops Where? by: Deborah Lambert, August 14, 2009 How is the recession affecting the free-spending habits of America’s colleges and universities? It depends on who you ask. Although Harvard’s 22 percent income drop did nothing to alter their recently announced plans to install a “chair in Gay Lesbian Transgendered and Queer Studies,” the university has had to lay off 300 employees, according to Anthony Paletta, senior editor at the Manhattan Institute's MindingtheCampus.com. In a recent Wall Street Journal column, Paletta noted that Harvard’s new austerity policy also included a temporary suspension of operations of its “Office of...

When hundreds of leaders from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community gathered in the East Room of the White House Monday to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the launch of the gay rights movement, President Obama worked to assuage concerns that his administration has not made much progress in addressing gay issues. Democratic activists in the LGBT community have said that President Obama's campaign promises to end the military's "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy and to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act do not seem to be top-tier priorities. When a legal brief, filed earlier this month by the...

After boldly promising to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and reverse “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the ban on openly gay and lesbian service members, gay voters, en bloc, went to the polls for then-Senator Barack Obama. But following months of concealing their bitter disappointment, gay rights advocates have begun publically airing their grievances with the Obama Administration over its concerning pace of progress on gay rights issues. Yesterday, amid fears neither of those lofty campaign pledges may be actualized, Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solomnese penned a stinging open letter to President Obama in response to a brief filed...

(Ali Jarekji/Reuters) Obama told his Muslim audience: “[W]e must say openly to each other the things we hold in our hearts and that too often are said only behind closed doors.” Hmmm … here are three things he didn’t seem to want to say openly in Cairo: He didn’t praise doubt, or promote LGBT, or read the Koran’s next verse. 1. He didn’t praise doubt. Specifically, he didn’t say this (I’ve added changes to his Notre Dame speech in boldface): “But remember too that the ultimate irony of faith in Islam is that it necessarily admits doubt in Mohammed the...

In a historic first for a sitting US President, Barack Obama has just released the following proclamation: --------------------------------------------------------------------- BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION: Forty years ago, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City resisted police harassment that had become all too common for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Postmodern Prof Whistles Dixie by: Malcolm A. Bibler is an assistant professor of English at Mary Washington. Younger Evangelicals Where Will They Take the Christian Right? By Pam Chamberlain Last October a chartered bus rolled deep through the South, its passengers college-aged young people drawing inspiration from the Freedom Riders of the 1960s. The black vinyl advertising plastered on the side broadcast the riders’ goals, “Equality Ride 2008: Faith in Action: Social Justice for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered People.” The bus brought young LGBTQ activists and their allies face to face with students at 15 Christian colleges in an attempt to generate more acceptance of homosexuality at evangelical schools. 2008 was the third year of the...

CHICAGO - Planners of Pride Campus never shied away from touting their proposed high school as a haven for gay youth seeking refuge from sometimes hostile traditional classrooms. But under mounting pressure from ministers and gay activists alike, the name has changed and the focus broadened to create a school that would be one of the nation’s largest to serve any students victimized by bullying and harassment. If approved by the country’s third-largest school district Wednesday, the Social Justice Solidarity High School would join several smaller U.S. campuses aimed at serving students who have been tormented for everything from their...

The First Congregational Church of Oakland made history Sunday, November 9 when an African American lesbian was installed as its new senior pastor. The Reverend Lynice Pinkard spoke briefly during the two and a half hour service, and in written remarks decried the passage last week of Proposition 8, which eliminated same-sex marriage in California. Pinkard, 46, formerly worked at the Ark of Refuge Church in San Francisco; she has been with First Congregational for six years. "It was horrific," Pinkard said of Prop 8's passage. "Rights have been eradicated." In a brief interview before the service, which also marked...

Hayward Parents Upset Over Anti-Gay Slur Pledge HAYWARD (AP) ― A Bay Area elementary school got caught in the crossfire of a ballot initiative seeking to outlaw same-sex marriage in California on Tuesday after a kindergarten teacher asked her pupils to sign pledge cards promising not to use anti-gay slurs. ProtectMarriage.com, the coalition of social and religious conservative groups sponsoring Proposition 8, offered the episode at Faith Ringgold Elementary School in Hayward as proof for its claim that the measure is needed to prevent public schools from discussing gay unions with students. "Since the words 'between a man and a...

Raising Transgender Awareness by: Deborah Lambert, September 26, 2008 Transgender students at Yale are concerned that the school is not focusing enough time and energy into providing “gender-neutral housing,” according to Anthony Paletta on mindingthecampus.com. About a month ago, the California Supreme Court, in a 4-3 decision, issued a declaratory opinion that Proposition 22, which states that, “Only a marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in California,” enshrined into statutory law by 61.4% of California voters in 2000 (over four million voters), was “unconstitutional” on the basis that "gender discrimination" violates the equal protection clause of the state constitution. The LA Times reported that: "The California Supreme Court struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage Thursday in a broadly worded decision that would invalidate virtually any law that discriminates...

The State of New York has been ordered to recognize homosexual "marriages" performed in U.S. states and foreign countries where the practice is legal. New York's highest court – the Court of Appeals – refused to review a lower-court ruling that ordered recognition of so-called foreign "same-sex marriages" performed outside the State of New York. Such unions must now be honored in New York if they were created legally -- for example, in Massachusetts or Canada. Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality says activist judges are now forcing homosexual marriage on New York citizens. "[T]his is a very...

The newest addition to the South State Street landscape has caused a stir on campus with its brightly colored logo, which some believe is offensive. "Papa loved Mama, so they got married and had babies." Thus does my earnest four-year-old summarize the mysteries of marital love. For scientific purposes that statement is terribly incomplete. For philosophical purposes, it hits the bull's eye. With those words Phil Lawler began a Wall Street Journal op-ed in March of 1996. His child's perspective stands in instructive contrast to an article in today's New York Times titled, "Talking With Children About Sex and AIDS: At What Age to Start?" The answer suggested in the lede is "How about, oh, 4?" The reporter tells us this is the subject...

The Republican party’s having a gay identity crisis as of late - and the ideological winner could change the party’s political fate, not to mention the election. As Kerry Eleveld eloquently explains in the Advocate, three of the presidential contenders oppose a federal amendment against gay marriage: John McCain, Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson, although the latter wants to make sure no one state has to endorse another’s married gays. Regardless of Thompson’s middle ground, his and his peers’ moderate stances show that the Republican party’s facing an important decision. Will they stick to their guns and give the once...

I just got off a conference call with John Edwards' deputy campaign manager Jonathan Prince and two supporters in the LGBT community in which the campaign sought to portray Edwards as the Democratic field's best champion of gay rights ahead of tonight's debate on gay issues in Los Angeles. Predictably, most questions focused on gay marriage. Edwards, like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, does not support gay marriage but backs civil unions. For the most part, Prince ducked the question of why Edwards does not support marriage by emphasizing the candidate's advocacy for civil unions, which he called "an issue...

Poland & Latvia must address LGBT issues Amnesty International is getting tough with new European Union countries over gay rights issues. “If the European Union wants 2007 to be “European Year of Equal Opportunities”, it needs to ensure as of now that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people can freely express, assemble and associate in countries such as Poland and Latvia”, says Amnesty International. Amnesty International is concerned that despite public attention to a string of homophobic incidents – in some cases actions and statements by the very authorities of these countries – little has been done to redress...

Separating anatomy from what it means to be a man or a woman, New York City is moving forward with a plan to let people alter the sex on their birth certificate even if they have not had sex-change surgery. Under the rule being considered by the city’s Board of Health, which is likely to be adopted soon, people born in the city would be able to change the documented sex on their birth certificates by providing affidavits from a doctor and a mental health professional laying out why their patients should be considered members of the opposite sex, and...

THE lesbian couple who pioneered gay marriage in America have split up, saying that their marital troubles show that they are no different from heterosexual partners. Julie and Hillary Goodridge led the legal battle that forced Massachusetts to become the first state in the US to allow same-sex marriage. As lead plaintiffs in the landmark case, they were featured in People magazine. Julie, 49, is president of an investment advisory firm,...

Boys with a number of elder brothers are more likely to grow up to be gay than boys with relatively fewer older brothers, younger brothers or sisters of any age - but is not the result of upbringing, says a study published today. For each additional older brother, a boy's chance of being homosexual increases by a third, it says. Prof Anthony Bogaert, at Brock University, in St Catherine's, Canada, says his research provides strong evidence that sexual orientation may be the result of biological processes in the womb. "If you have a biological brother, and you never even lived...

Over the last thirty years, some "mainstream" denominations have made enormous strides in their attitudes, policies and practices concerning LGBT people. For example, the Episcopal Church (USA), Reform Judaism, United Churches of Christ, and Unitarian...
