Posted on 07/01/2006 1:15:53 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Bin Laden Says Will Take Fight to America
(Full Story)

Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden said his group reserved the right to fight the United States on its land and warned Washington and the world community against sending forces to Somalia, according to an Internet audio tape.

"We will fight its (U.S.) soldiers on the land of Somalia ... and we reserve the right to punish it on its land and anywhere possible," said the speaker, who sounded like the Saudi-born militant.

"We warn all of the countries in the world not to respond to America by sending international troops to Somalia," he said of the African nation where Islamists' power is rising.

Do these new missiles have the range and accuracy to hit Tel Aviv or Jerusalem? If they manage to strike those areas what do you forsee as the IDF reactions?

The Zelzal-2 has more than enough range, it is essentially a slightly smaller version of the old soviet FROG rocket. Current concerns regarding the use of this rocket is that Hezbollah will fire it from the n. Bekaah valley, then scoot the launchers over the border into Syria. Israel will have no other options other than to strike into Syria. Syria, however, is in no position to challenge Israel militarily IMHO. They lost their major supplier when the USSR broke up, half of their air force cannot fly, and the pilots don't have the flight time available necessary for advanced combat training. Ground units are in similar poor shape. IF Israel has to strike into Syria at Hezbollah targets, the best that Syria could do is try to save face.

Also, what do you make of the apparent schism between MOSSAD and the Military Intelligence apparatus? MOSSAD says that Hezbollah has not been significantly degraded, while the military insists that the terrorist infrastructure has been greatly impacted by ground and air operations...that perhaps as much as 50% of the organization has been taken out.

I see this as a serious lack of leadership by the PM. I tend to think MOSSAD is more correct. The IDF incursion into Lebanon recently discovered how deeply dug in Hezbollah is. BDA from IAF is probably too generous and the rate of rocket fire has resumed previous levels. Olmert is losing this thing by holding back. IDF has lost face in that a smaller Hezbollah force has held its own for so long. Now IDF has lost some tactical advantage.

Final question: Do the Israeli people have the stomach to go the distance. This has the potential of being much bigger than any of the conflicts in the '60's or at any other time since 1948. Especially if Iran and Syria decide to play, too.

I think they do, public opinion seems high that this is the right thing to do. However, Olmert's numbers are falling because it seems he is holding back and is afraid of international opinion. For once the international community is FOR Israel, but he is spineless and IMHO is trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory with his mishandling of the conflict.

Great dialogue, Godzilla, Ex Soldier.

I've been very grumpy since about day 2 of this 'war'.
Israel was too slow and meek in moving north. The strategy seems to be a lot of Macnamaraesque(?) PC crap, blow up bridges, empty houses and buildings and try to scare people.
Sharon was/is a tough old bastard but knew how to fight and win with Israels assets and geography.
Now, with all the pussyfooting, I think it will take even more boots on the ground.
And the outlaw government of Iran and the head hog of Hezbullah should not place too much reliance on the sanctity of the Iranian embassy. Iran changed international law vis a vis 'sanctity'.

THE KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA CALLS ON ALL TO ACT IN ACCORDANCE WITH HONEST, CONSCIOUS AND INTERNATIONAL MORAL AND HUMANITARIAN LAWS. IT ALSO WARNS ALL THAT IF THE PEACE OPTION IS REJECTED DUE TO THE ISRAELI ARROGANCE THEN ONLY THE WAR OPTION REMAINS AND NO ONE KNOWS THE REPERCUSSIONS BEFALLING THE REGION, INCLUDING WARS AND CONFLICT THAT WILL SPARE NO ONE INCLUDING THOSE WHOSE MILITARY POWER IS NOW TEMPTING THEM TO PLAY WITH FIRE.

This is one post/quote that shows the stage is set for war with no question whatsoever. Now do we feel a bit vindicated about national outrage concerning Saudi control of our nation's ports and what about all the other places where they DO have control and major input upon American soil?

BINGO! PC behavior will be the death of the free world. It is aiding and abetting terrorists worldwide. They have learned to use the world's legal systems like finely tuned instruments. We already know who wants America and Israel to fail, but we persist in pretending "they'll come around. "

We should be searching for and deporting potential terrorists already here due to our lax (unenforced) immigration policies (especially those of ME origin), but instead we apparently wait for attack from within on our own shores, which will serve to hugely embolden Syria, Iran and their host of cohorts/suppliers/two-faced friends of America.

Olmert is on the verge of being the first PM to cause Israel to lose a war. He'd better buck up or step aside for some one that has what it takes to follow the job through to the finish.

Special Terrorism Summary 07/29/06
Israel At War

Overall Summary and Comments
Things are very fuzzy as to Israel’s operational intent and goals. They have changed from initially saying that they will destroy Hezbollah completely to permitting them to remain and armed in a limited fashion. Internally, the Mossad and the IDF command are at odds regarding the effectiveness of the campaign so far. Olmert is on brink of being first Israeli PM to actually LOSE a war.

Forcast for next 24 hours

More mixed signals. Israel’s softness has emboldened Hezbollah leadership who may take the conflict to a higher level, striking deeper into Israel. Also mixed signals whether or not IDF is going to expand ground operations in S. Lebanon. A significant trip wire will be if Hezbollah rockets Tel Aviv. If that occurs then Israel will be pushed to expand the conflict into Syria.

Israel hits Lebanon-Syria highway near border
IAF targets main road to Damascus ‘to cut arms supply routes from Syria to Hizbullah terrorists.’ UN: Two Indian soldiers with organization’s peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon wounded in Israeli air strike Reuters An Israeli air strike hit Lebanon's main road to Damascus on Saturday just 1 km from the border with Syria, cutting the highway in both directions.

Still Looking to go deeper
Iran, the main sponsor of Hezbollah, has given the "green light" for the Lebanese terror group to shoot rockets toward the center of Israel, including under certain conditions at Tel Aviv. "I declare that we will enter the 'beyond Haifa' stage," said Nasrallah on Hezbollah's Al-Manar television. "In the new stage, our attacks will not remain limited to Haifa. Irrespective of the reaction of the enemy forces on the rocketing of Haifa, we will move to the stage of beyond Haifa." Later Wednesday the Iranian Fars news agency in Lebanon quoted Fuad Dirani, a commander in Hezbollah, saying the terror group has set a new target for itself – the city of Netanya, which is about 16 miles north of Tel Aviv, Israel's commercial capital.

Tide Of Arab Opinion Turns To Support For Hezbollah
Arab governments, starting with Saudi Arabia, initally slammed Hezbollah for recklessly provoking a war. Now, with Hezbollah holding out against the vaunted Israeli military for more than two weeks, the tide of public opinion across the Arab world is surging behind the organization, transforming the Shiite group’s leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, into a folk hero and forcing a change in official statements. However, official statements at this stage are still not what Hezbollah is really looking for, they are wanting support militarily.

Syria Military Alert Status
Officials said Syria has placed its forces on the highest alert in years and deployed missile batteries along the border with Lebanon. They said Israel, which has ordered the mobilization of three reserve divisions, plans to station Arrow-2 and PAC-2 missile defense systems to protect Tel Aviv from Syrian rockets and missiles.
The focus of Israeli concern has been the deployment of Zelzal-2 rockets in southwestern Syria along the Lebanese border. They said Syria has transferred Zelzal-2 batteries, with a range of more than 200 kilometers, to Hizbullah's Nasser Brigade.
"The most likely scenario is that Hezbullah would bring these mobile launchers into Lebanon, fire them and return to Syria," an Israeli intelligence source said. If Hezbullah employes such a tactic, I expect Israel to go after the launchers and storage sites. The extent that Syria get involved and targeted depends upon if they try to protect Hezbullah.

Bush, Blair Urge Multinational Force
President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair declared Friday that a multinational force should be dispatched quickly to help Lebanon regain control of the southern part of its country from the Hezbollah militia.

Hezbollah blinking?
Hezbollah politicians, while expressing reservations, have joined their critics in the government in agreeing to a peace package that includes strengthening an international force in south Lebanon and disarming the guerrillas, the government said. The agreement — reached after a heated six-hour Cabinet meeting — was the first time that Hezbollah has signed onto a proposal for ending the crisis that includes the deploying of international forces. The package falls short of American and Israeli demands in that it calls for an immediate cease-fire before working out details of a force and includes other conditions.

Israel Shows Weakness
Israeli troops pulled back from a Lebanese border town Saturday after a weeklong battle with Hezbollah, the bloodiest ground fighting of the 18-day Israeli offensive. Warplanes blasted bridges and demolished houses, killing a woman and her five children. The battle for Bint Jbail has symbolized Israel’s difficulty in pushing guerrillas back from the border, whether by air bombardment or ground assault.

This is exactly what Israel should NOT do, and is exactly what Hezbollah WANTS.

Gaza Situation
Generally overwhelmed by what is happening in the north, Israel continues to strike and manuever into/out of the Gaza strip at will. It appears that they are being very selective in their targets and are doing so without drawing support from the north.

Coalition Forces Capture Terrorists, Seize Weapons

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 27, 2006 – Coalition forces captured 13 suspected terrorists and found several weapons caches throughout Iraq this week, U.S. military officials in Iraq reported.
Coalition forces successfully targeted and captured a wanted terrorist and another associate during a raid north of Tikrit, today. The targeted terrorist is a known leader of several al Qaeda in Iraq members in the area, officials said. Intelligence indicates the group is responsible for an attack on an Iraqi checkpoint that killed nine Iraqi security forces and wounded 14 others July 6.

Elsewhere, Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained six suspected terrorists and located a buried weapons cache southwest of Baghdad on July 25.
Soldiers from Company A, 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, noticed a suspicious burial site while conducting a dismounted combat patrol at about 2:15 p.m. The soldiers cordoned off the area and unearthed several mortar rounds, a box of miscellaneous ammunition, two mortar sites and other bomb-making materials. The weapons cache was destroyed in a controlled detonation by an explosive ordnance disposal team.

In another operation, Multinational Division Baghdad's 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, captured five wanted terrorists and seized four weapons caches during a counterinsurgency mission that began at about 2 a.m. July 24 and continued through 9:30 a.m. July 25 in Sayifiyah, a city in Babil province.

Overall, the caches consisted of various machine guns, a rocket-propelled-grenade launcher, various mortar rounds, ammunition, and grenades. The caches also included duffel bags full of miscellaneous bomb-making materials, mortar fuses and detonation cord.

During the operations, soldiers also disabled an improvised explosive device and identified a car bomb, which was destroyed by an explosive ordnance disposal team. The suspected terrorists were detained for questioning.

In a separate operation, patrols from 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, found weapons and munitions at sites north and west of Baghdad July 24 and 25.

A patrol from 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, seized 1,000 7.62 mm rounds, 800 PKC rounds, a 155 mm artillery round, a German sniper rifle, a 9 mm pistol, an AK-47 assault rifle and various bomb-making materials after responding to a tip west of Baghdad at about 9 p.m. July 25. Another patrol from the same unit seized various ammunition, including of 400 7.62 mm rounds of ammunition, 12 AK-47 magazines with ammunition, and 53 shotgun shells, at about 11:30 p.m. July 24 west of Baghdad.

(Compiled from Multinational Corps Iraq news releases.)
