Is he still irrelevant?

#7 in the Senate. I expected McConnell would easily make the top ten. He seems to be one of those sleepers: you never really hear a whole lot about him, but when he does move things happen.

Has Supreme Solar Allah been released from jail yet?

It's gotta hurt if your Congressman has less power than every non-voting delegate from a US territory. In Ms. Moore's case, that might be a good thing.

People I'd call relatively good conservatives hold just four of the top spots in the Senate list. Note Pubs are in last place on both lists.

Some quick Excel arithmetic reveals that R's have 61% of power in Senate and 67% of power in House. With that much "power," why can't they govern like R's instead of damn D's?

Well if you get down to basics what this actually means is who holds the power on marquee committees and sub-committes. It really doesn't mean much in the way of actual effectiveness.

"He probably strays too much from the Dem line, has no real area of substantial expertise, and does not have much seniority."

Actually, he now almost uniformally toes the 'Rat line, has served for 16 years in Congress (albeit his first 12 were from 1983-95, before returning (to a different district) in 2003), and was once considered to be a bright star in Congress during his final term (before Fred Thompson obliterated him in the Senate race) and "quite knowledgeable" on substantive issues. Now, however, he is just an embarrassingly invisible backbencher for the minority representing one of the greatest booming cities in the country, Nashville. I wrote a piece excoriating him on a somewhat liberal urban issues website, and to my surprise, not even the liberal 'Rat diehards offered a defense of the guy. Frankly, I'd rather have Bob Clement back. He may be a 'Rat, but at least he was pro-life and generally voted right about half the time.

He does seem that way. He had the zest and the fire in the belly back when he was in the majority. When he returned to Congress (in what was a seemingly improbable comeback, as the initial leading candidates were our sleazy ex-Vice Mayor who was caught shoplifting sports cards at a Target or Wal-Mart (forgot which), and it turned out it wasn't the first time he had shoplifted and the other was an embarrassing EMILY'S List ineffectual ultraliberal female Sheriff), he soon realized it was not the place he remembered and got a taste of what it was like for Republicans serving under 60 years of 'Rat Speakers. He is almost completely invisible these days and was reduced to whiny pieces in the paper about how he misses the "good ole days." Sadly, barring the election of a moderate 'Rat like Clement, there is almost no chance of getting a Republican in (one hasn't been elected in 134 years during Grant's reelection).

It's got to be disheartening to be in the last 11 or so in the house, ranked in power less than the representative from Guam, who can't vote! If WITH a vote you are less powerful than a non-voting territorial rep, well...I wouldn't mind having your job. After all, serve 2 years in the House, and get a lifetime retirement pension!

He represented the 4th previously (a rural Conservative area east of Nashville -- he was succeeded by Van Hilleary) and then moved to Nashville some time later to represent the 5th. It's remarkable to consider he was always on tv making the rounds back during his previous tenure (including nationally, such as CNN at the time, as Fox wasn't around yet, and the Sunday morning yakfests), and now, he's just constantly AWOL.

And this fellow representing Puerto Rico: Res. Com. Fortuno (R-PR-AL), at 214 on the list, has no vote and is still more powerful, according to this list, than over half the House!

He got a safe seat and relaxed. Before it was a bit tougher going.

COngress.org is fooling themselves: Sen. Kennedy has nearly the power of a god in the Senate. Even President Bush, himself, grovels before his master, allowing Kennedy to write most of Bush's major legislative initiatives. That's why Jeffords bolted; No Child Left Behind was HIS jurisdiction to write, and Bush gave it to a Democrat, and one of the most liberal and represehensible. Jeffords was taught in no ambiguous way, that there was no point in being a Republican; Kennedy still wielded power. It is truly sickening.

By the way, Cooper only has four years of seniority, as you know, since he returned to the House. They don't append years served previously, just put the guy at the head of his class for the year elected.

My idiot (429) beat your idiot (432), and I'm not sure why, but she can spell about 4 words: Send me your money
