Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean is almost giddy about the prospects of America revisiting the 1960s through the election of a Democratic Congress and president. Addressing a recent religious conference in Washington, D.C., he spoke glowingly about how the radical counterculture changed America, and how he looks forward to the nation returning to the "same moral principles" that made the '60s great.
But he hopes in the next go-round, Democrats can avoid the mistakes that marred the legacy of the '60s. Specifically, through public housing, they "created ghettoes for poor people," he admitted, and through the welfare state, "we did give things away for free, and that's a huge mistake because that does create a culture of dependence, and that's not good for anybody, either."
He is being too modest because the malignant counterculture inflicted a great deal more damage than just keeping the poor in poverty and chaining them to the government. Together with liberalized divorce laws and the rise of radical feminism, it set out to destroy marriage and the family. Its successes are manifest: the decline in spiritualism; the acceptance of cohabitation and homosexuality; the murderous culture of abortion; the ascension of same-sex marriage and civil unions, and the coming push to legalize polygamy and any other household combinations imaginable; the explosion of pornography, out-of-wedlock births and sexually transmitted diseases; the AIDS epidemic. Today's cultural rot and its attending carnage are rooted in the sexual revolution, the drug culture and the anything-goes mores of the 1960s.
Though Mr. Dean believes the era was about "everybody's in it together," it really was about entitlement, self-indulgence and personal emancipation without moral obligations, legal constraints or a thought of personal responsibility or the rights of others.
And no accounting would be complete without noting how the Democrats' fiscal, economic and energy policies -- nearly identical to the ones they advocate today -- led to multiple recessions, record inflation, high unemployment, more widespread poverty and gas lines. If not for Ronald Reagan and his Federal Reserve chairman, Paul Volcker, stagflation would be with us still.
America can't return to the moral principles of the '60s because the era had no moral principles except immorality. Yet Mr. Dean wants to revisit those toxic times. Haven't the nation and its people suffered enough?

They really are stuck in the past. Didn't Kennedy give a speech in 2003 saying the US was a better country BECAUSE we lost Vietnam?? At least until we elected Reagan..

The author ran outta space before he covered the record incarceration rate, especially among the people that the 60's purported to help (minorities and women).
Someone ought to send Howard a copy of "Destructive Generation" by Collier/Horowitz.
I don't know what Dean means by us "being in it together." When I got my draft notice I didn't see Dean or any other Ivy League elitists at the induction center.
Look what we got after 50 years (1944-1994) of a demoncRAT-controlled House of Reps. Look what 8 years (1992-2000) of a miserable morally-challenged ethically-lacking demoncRAT-controlled White House did for us. Hey Deanie Weanie, just shut the **** up.
