Spelling was too long ago. June Allison and someone else died within the last few days. I'm still trying to remember who it was.

Red Buttons was such a talented man. My favorite role he played was that of Kelly, in Sayonara. He won an Academy Award for best supporting actor. I cry everytime I watch the scene when he and Katsumi (played by Miyoshi Umeki) die rather than be parted.

I remember him in these films: The Longest Day, The Poseidon Adventure and as "Pockets" in Hatari....a John Wayne film. He left a mark!

Maybe it was Red Foxx. Now, he would be an interesting house guest. You know if you really wanted to impress the boss and especially his wife.

Red Buttons started in show business at age seven, singing on street corners. He started in burlesque in 1939, working for Minskys. He also did Broadway and had a television series in the sixties, "The Double Life of Henry Phife".

Buttons made a lot of movies during the seventies, but his career spanned somewhere around fifty years.

He was born on the lower east side of Manhattan, in an area called "the miracle mile." Buttons, Fanny Brice, Jimmy Durante, Eddie Cantor, George Burns and George Gershwin all came from the same neighborhood.

Just a little Red Buttons info. Loved his work, especially Hatari, and was seriously jealous when he got Carol Linley in the Poseidon Adventure. I always thought in terms of appearance, she was as close to perfect as it gets.

I do remember his performances in "The Poseidon Adventure" and my favorite "Sayonara". Everytime I see "Sayonara" I start crying when Brando discovers the double suicide. My heart bleeds when he discovers his Japanese wife played by Myoshi Umeki is planning to slit her eyes. He so rough, tough Joe Kelly with a heart of gold.

I was planning on watching that movie...anything else you want to give away? :)

Barney Frank, who was once quoted as saying, "I never met a hamster I didn't like"... Never had a dinner.

Rosie O' Donnell, who was caught at the 'biker' bars asking "Your face or mine?"... Never had a dinner. Unless you count all the times she "ate out"...

Red Buttons sign off from his 1960's TV show was "good night and may God bless". While I had heard many say "God bless", I had never heard anyone using it in this more respectful phrasing. Even as I child I was struck by how much more appropriate is this subjective form of the expression. Leaving out the "may" always seemed like a presumptive attempt to command God to do one's bidding.

Curiously, the only other public figure that I know who habitually uses this form is George W. Bush.

Anyone who lived in South Florida in the late 70s remember him as the spokesperson for "Century Village", in Fort Lauderdale, which I believe was the first Adult Community in the country.
