HERE is an amazing statistic for you— children in the United States are twelve times more likely to die of gunshot wounds than any other country in the world not actually involved in civil war.

That is not all. Not only is it possible in many American states to buy a handgun over the counter, no questions asked, but it is also possible to buy bullets whose sole purpose is to penetrate the body armour worn by policeman.

Yet despite years of pressure by advocates of gun control, Congress has apparently been unable to agree on any measure that would significantly curtail the availability of guns. Any move to do so is met by the wrath of the National Rifle Association, one of the most powerful lobbies in the United States.

If you read though it you'll find the article is unintentionally funny because Knightley, the author, basically regurgitates all of the false scholarship of Michael Bellesiles, the disgraced Emory University professor who was forced to resign his tenured position after many scholars proved Arming America, the book Knightley uses for his article without direct attribution, was a academic fraud. Funniest of all, Knightley identifies Bellesiles but doesn't mention anything about his subsequent disgrace.

Knightley didn't just make this up--he used Michael Bellesiles' Arming America as his unattributed source, even though he does say Bellesiles' work is what he relied on. Arming America was proved to be a thoroughgoing made-up academic fraud and Bellesiles was forced to resign from his tenured position at Emory University as a result. I rechecked the date of this article, which is today, before I posted it because it reads as though it were written immediately after Arming America was published instead of today when everyone knows about the fraud, and has known about it for the last three or four years. To say the least, Knightley didn't do anything to update his research. Of course, maybe that's why he published this column in the Khaleej Times instead of a paper more well known in Britain and the US. If he'd tried to put it in an American or British paper the editors might have insisted he update his research and rethink the idea of relying on the disgraced Bellesiles as his sole source.

What a Maroon. He quotes the second amendment twice, and gets it wrong both times. Of course what he leaves out gives lie to his basic thesis, so leaving it out twice is very telling.

The famous Second Amendment reads: "The right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed".

The full Second Amendment reads: "A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed."

The little part about the right to keep arms gives complete lie to the theory that:
it was the right of the people to organise and arm themselves as militias, repeat militias, that was being guaranteed, not the right to carry arms when on private business.

He shows he doesn't even understand what probate was and is, that is a record of what person owned *at the time of his death*. They were notoriously incomplete anyway, as children and grandchildren helped themselves to the possessions of the the departed (often before departure) before filing the paperwork.

And on the frontier and wilderness, which would have the most need for guns, the question would be "What paperwork?". America in the 1700's and 1800's did not have the paperwork of today. Grandpa died? Make a note of it in the family Bible. Things like firearms would have been passed on to the younger generation as soon as the current owner was too old to go hunting with it.
