German military cemetery opened

16.07.2006

The biggest German military cemetery in Poland has been opened at Glinna in the north-west of the country. The remains of some 10,000 German troops fallen during World War II were buried there. Eventually, there will be some 32,000 graves there. The remains were exhumed in four north-western, western and south-western provinces, starting from the year 2000, when work on the construction of the cemetery began. It is located on a rolling plane, which is divided into marked quarters. There are three stone crosses in each quarter. In some parts of the cemetery one can spot small plaques bearing the name of the fallen soldier and date of his death. The focal point is a several meter high cross made of stone. This is the 13th German military cemetery organized in Poland after several decades when German graves dating World War II and before were neglected and even destroyed.
