Problems happened later, says Dukakis
The Boston Globe ^ | July 18, 2006 | Andrea Estes

Governor Michael S. Dukakis, whose administration hired Big Dig manager Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff, yesterday attributed problems on the huge construction project to later administrations.

Dukakis, the last Democrat to hold the Massachusetts governor's office, told a television interviewer last night that he had urged Governor William F. Weld, a Republican, to ask Frederick P. Salvucci, transportation secretary under Dukakis, "to stay on and run that project for you."

"Well, he didn't do that," Dukakis said of Weld on WGBH's "Greater Boston."

"So we've had a series of people over there who aren't bad people," Dukakis said, "but they didn't have anywhere near the kind of skill and the qualifications -- I mean Salvucci's got two degrees from MIT. He's got political skills coming out of his ears. He's done incredible work. I mean if Fred Salvucci had run that job ... it would have been done in half the time and at half the cost."

Salvucci was transportation secretary from 1983 to 1991.

The whole project was estimated to be $4 billion or less. It's now at $14 billion.

What Dukakis is saying is that his guy could have done the job for $7 billion, or almost twice what it was planned for.

I love this ~ all answers are bad!!! Ain't often you find that.

Let the finger pointing begin! Of course if Dukakis were still governor, he would furlough anyone jailed for negligence or other criminal conduct in association with this multi-billion dollar boondoggle!

You know, suddenly riding in tanks while wearing hydrocephalically big helmets doesn't seem quite so dorky.

The really funny (and curious) thing about Dukakis here in Massachusetts is that it's all but impossible to find anyone who will admit to *ever* having voted for him.

I wonder if Kitty D. still drinks running alcohol to catch a buzz...and forget who she's married to.

That picture isn't why he lost - he lost because he was (is) a card-carrying-ACLU-member-flaming-left-lib whose campaign was managed by Susan Estrich and he would sooner 'furlough' a convicted-for-life-without-parole-first-degree-murderer than uphold the law.

Read Chapter 3 in GODLESS concerning this dork and the criminals he set free to prey on society, after they had been caught and duly convicted. He's a dangerous idiot!

ROTFLMFAO!!!!!!!

It looks like with all the H1B visas granted lately to foreign engineers (undercutting all technical degree salaries), they could have found someone who did know what to do. I don't think it would have helped. It's probably not a design problem, but is related to the poor quality of materials actually delivered to the project and/or slipshod installation methods.

Typical results from a mob and union infested Yankee building project.

"Classic typo"

Phew, now I don't feel so stupid. ;)

I checked, I doubt I typed the n's (next to the b) with my left hand. Weird.
