that is still a possibility - someone else's missile. could a terrorist missile with that range have been fired from a boat off the coast?

They would have needed a radar guided missile which means a radar system to aim and lock the missile onto its target. Something like this is not the size of a rowboat. Highly unlikely they had something like that because if they did, we would have seen it used again.

for it to be a US navy missile

It wasn't the Navy.

From Swordmaker....

"In the absence of explanations, theories abounded. One focused on a fax sent Wednesday to an Arabic language newspaper in Beirut warning of an attack. State Department and CIA officials confirmed they had received copies of the fax Thursday. The message said "tomorrow morning we will strike the Americans in a way they do not expect and it will be very surprising to them," according to one official. A counterterrorism source familiar with the fax said that it was sent at 11 a.m. New York time Wednesday, more than nine hours before the bombing. But a CIA source said that the agency "does not attach too much significance" to the fax.

"The fax, written in Arabic, ends with the following threat: "The Mujahadeen will respond harshly to the threats of the stupid American president. All will be shocked by the magnitude of the response. The determining of the place and time are in the hands of the Mujahadeen. The invaders must get ready to leave alive or dead; and their rendezvous will be morning, and isn't morning near." U.S. News and World Report magazine, in the July 29, 1996 issue, identified the group who sent the fax as, "The Movement of Islamic Jihad/The Jihad Wing of the Arabian Peninsula." [Editors Note: 8pm Eastern Time in New York is early morning in the Persian Gulf.]" Newsday.com, July 19, 1996

. . . Senior Iranian sources close to the fundamentalist regime in Tehran claimed this weekend that TWA flight 800 was shot down last month by one of three shoulder-fired Stingers of the type used by Islamic guerrillas during the Afghanistan war. The sources said the missiles arrived in America seven months ago after being shipped from Karachi via Rotterdam and on to the Canadian port of Halifax. They claimed an Egyptian fundamentalist group backed by Iran was responsible for smuggling the weapons across the Canadian border into the United States. The group, the Gama'a al-Islamiya, comprises followers of Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, a blind Egyptian cleric jailed in the United States over the 1993 New York World Trade Center bombing."The Times of London, August 27, 1996

" . . . at least one terrorist has claimed credit for the TWA 800 bombing. World Trade Center bomber Ramzi Ahmed Yousef told authorities his group is responsible. Yousef's claim has not been made public, but it is in the FBI file. The American Spectator, Sept. 1997

If you can read Arabic, here is the Al Hayat article threatening the attack.. It's a PDF.

jveritas looked at and this is what he said: This is a July 20th 1996 article from the AL HAYAT Arabic newspaper and in summary the article said that before 8 hours from the TWA 800 explosion, the newspaper received a letter from an islamic group called "The Islamic Change Movement Al Jazeera AL Arabia Wing" claiming repsonsibilty for an terrorist attack that occurred in Ryad Saudi Arabia last November and adopt the Khobar terrorist attack last June. In their letter the terrorists promised a very severe attack in the US and it will surprise everyone with the magnitude of the attack. The Newspaper went on to say that some are making a connection between the threat in the letter of the terrorist group above and the TWA 800 explosion.

I think it was probably a terrorist missile. I find it all but impossible to think something like that could happen within the USN and stay totally secret for so long. People talk.

If it were a terrorist missile, however, the call to be honest or cover up would have ultimately been in the hands of Bill and Hillary.

And terrorists don't have the kind of radar guided missiles necessary to blow a 747 out of the sky when it is at 15,000+ feet.

More importantly . . . If a terrorist had any intention of shooting down an eastbound passenger aircraft flying out of JFK International Airport, he would not have bothered doing it at a point where the aircraft would be more than 16,000 feet overhead when he could as easily do it 25-50 miles further west where the aircraft would be flying much lower.

what did they do, brain wash the crew? all of them, regular americans who volunteered for the navy - are going to cover this up, not speak a word of it, for 10 years?

for it to be a US navy missile - everyone on that ship would have known a missile was launched off long island the night this plane was downed. no way to cover that up, someone would have talked by now.

Have you no respect?

You are punching big holes in the tin foil.

I beg you to stop!

I'm still keeping an open mind- not enough information yet. But, if it were not a US missile, you would only have one cell or two to keep quiet. No need for a shipload of sailors and the hundred or so supply people, just six in the US and six more somewhere else.

And this was during Clinton- for sure if it HAD been a US missile, he'd have been all over them. This was the pres who tried to stop the Marine Band from playing at his inaugural, fer hemsakes.

If I were to speculate, I'd suggest a shoebomber on the plane and a ground crew to fire some military-type smoke/marker rocket for diversion (so as not to reveal the nature of the real threat, which could easily be stopped if you knew about it.) Just speculating, here.

Take a look at the number of commercial air fatalities before 9/11 and the number after- planes have stopped falling out of the sky, and I must take my shoes off to get through security at LAX.

off the south shore of long island, there are hundreds of boats out there.

I don't know about a missile launched from the beach but I was a surface missile Fire Controlman. The closest ship was over a hundred miles away.

The aircraft was at 12k feet. You can't see an aircraft at that altitude on radar from that distance because of the curvature of the earth much less hit it with a missile.

Theory? It was on the freakin local news! They had video of the damn thing that evening...then there mysteriously wasn't any video.

I saw it with my own eyes. If that projectile headed toward the plane before it exploded wasn't a missile, then what was it and where is that tape?

Easily. There were lots of unaccounted for stingers in...drum roll please...Afghanastan at the time. The plane, according to a FR thread, exploded at around 5,500 feet.

There were lots of reasons, including the Atlanta Olympics, why the WH wouldn't want to deal with a major terrorist incident at that time.

Not only that, but the launch would have lit up the horizon.

I suspect it was a fuel leak.

Wrong, the initial explosion occurred at over 15,000 feet. The detonation of the wing fuel tanks occurred around 5,500 feet.

Secondly, IR missiles would not have caused the center fuel tank to explode. An IR missile would have taken off an engine at most.

I'd believe a bomb long before I'd ever believe it was a missile.

That said, until I see evidence of a bomb, I'm going to stick with the report from the NTSB that even Boeing supports.

A missile by a U.S. Naval vessel would mean that nearly 200-300 crewmembers would be "keeping quiet."

Not likely. In fact it's impossible.

How many military personnel do you know who run their mouths off about everything that they did while on active duty? You can do some research and come across any number of incidents from the post-WW2 era involving highly classified things related to U.S. submarine activities, for example.

And there's no reason to assume that this involved a U.S. Navy ship, either. I've seen some speculation that this could have involved a ship from another NATO country.
