Oil tanker on fire in Providence harbor
Local TV news

Posted on 07/18/2006 8:01:21 PM PDT by Semper911

An oil tanker moored in Providence harbor was apparently struck by lightning, and is burning in towering flames. I posted this in breaking because there is an LPG tanker moored nearby, and officials are worried the mooring lines on the burning tanker will burn through, and it will drift toward the LPG.

Did anyone see a bright light ascend toward the tanker just before the explosion? Oh, 270 of you did? Then this was caused by a spark in the fuel tank.

Practically a zero chance that the LPG tanker will explode. Fire nearby won't do it.

Practically a zero chance that the LPG tanker will explode. Fire nearby won't do it.

It is the impact from an adrift tanker that they are worried about. They can't get close enough to put out the fire near the mooring lines.

Reporter on the scene just said: "I don't like what I am hearing on the scanner. I am getting out of here."

Not-so-obscure reference to TWA flight 800. But I have no idea why someone would post that about this situation, though.

You should see the video of this thing. Towering flames, and firefighters say they can't even think of getting near it. It is massive.

Providence harbor, by the way, is in the middle of a major metro area.

Man local news is treating this like it's the end of the world. Ohh the humanity!! Looks bad, but the large LNG tank nearby will not a factor.

Takes many hours, exspecially if they are unloading.

It's an LNG tanker. Nitrogen. Super cooled. Could be very dangerous.

Watching local Providence TV station NBC 10.

This is a gigantic blaze. It is an industrial area....no homes involved but concern is that other tanks could blow.
