The power problems had Mayor Bloomberg promising swift action by Con-Ed. He said they're doing all they can, but CBS 2 caught Con Edison workers in Woodside not working.
Five Con Edison workers in two vans were caught on video, sleeping, reading newspapers, making phone calls, and removing their sign that indicates they are at work.
This lasted for nearly half an hour.
The workers were asked, "I was just wondering what you guys have been doing this past half-hour? Because I saw the manhole over here. Is this a cable repair?"
One worker said, "We're working over here on the sidewalk. I really can't say anything. We're trying our best. So, that's all I can really tell you right now."
When asked if they were on lunch break for the past half hour, the worker said, "No."
He then added, "I can't really say anything. Sorry."
A co-worker in the Con-Ed truck where this worker was interviewed slept through the entire interview.
The workers then drove off after being asked if they could say what they were repairing.
Residents in the area also questioned the workers. Restaurant owner Luis Figueroa said, "They say, 'Well, I don't know, we don't know yet. We're working on it.' I said, 'But I see you here eating. I saw you for an hour. You've been eating; you've been sitting down here inside the van with the A.C. on.'"
Another resident said, "They were there yesterday. They're not doing anything."
Con Edison officials refused to look at the video of their workers or to explain on camera what they were doing.
Someone from the public relations department at Con Edison spoke with CBS 2 on the phone, saying, "First and foremost, you're not allowed to speak directly to our employees...Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We'll look into it and call you."
Con Edision has yet to follow up on their promise of a return call.
Do mosquitos suck blood?
"First and foremost, you're not allowed to speak directly to our employees..."
Uhhh, yes they are.

I just got some of my power back last night. But this morning its still not on all the way again. Con Edison stinks. This has been going on in Queens for 5 days now.
Youse wouldn't want anything to happen to those nice power lines going into your TV station. Kind of hard to run a transmitter without electricity.
They don't have to start working until they are on overtime. Union work rules.
Great public service attitude...NOT!
I admit it's pretty dumb to sleep on the job, but how many of us here are spending work time posting to message boards on the internerd? I'm just sayin'.
There was a similiar problem at the University of Minnesota about 6-7 years ago.
A local TV station filmed U of M employees sleeping in official cars, reading the newspaper, etc....all on official work time.
Several times, camera crews (and a reporter) would walk up to the unsuspecting employee and ask him why he was sleeping on official work time.
The employee would either drive away or would give a belligerently non-commital answer.
As I recall, the U of M said "Hey, let us take a look into this and we'll get back to you". Near as I can recall, nothing happened.
Well, if the liberals ever sweep back into power with their doctrine of Free Stuff and Tax the Dickens out of Achievement, you have a viable picture of what's going to happen to my work ethic.
Unions...Bloodsuckers...yessssss....
LOL!
And there your buddies go again.
They are obviously emulating the Cynthia McKinney work ethic
Lily Tomlin on Sat. Nite Live did a great skit as a telephone operator.
Her best line was "we don't care, we don't have to, we're the phone company"
That was before deregulation of course, but this applies to any "public service" monopoly.

I had to check the date of the article as this is word for word the same as what was reported in the 60's and 70's. ConEd hasn't changed.
