Gay groups celebrate election results [re: Ralph Reed in Georgia]

Even before many gay election parties kicked into high gear Tuesday night, Ralph Reed — one of the political operatives most responsible for the religious right’s rise to power in Georgia and nationally — approached a podium inside the InterContinental Buckhead Hotel to announce, “Tonight, my candidacy for lieutenant governor comes to an end.”

Reed’s early concession speech drew raucous reactions from gay and lesbian election-watchers gathered at Einstein’s restaurant in Midtown, and from those assembled at Perk Caféé in East Atlanta to cheer on Allen Thornell’s attempt to become the first openly gay man elected to the Georgia General Assembly.

But few gay people were more elated by Reed’s decisive defeat than Randy New, who along with his partner and a co-worker were at his home eating pizza, “laughing our heads off” as Reed announced his loss. In recent weeks New and his law firm, Kitchens New, encouraged gay voters to crossover into the Republican primary to vote against Reed in his contest versus state Sen. Casey Cagle (R-Gainesville).

It reads like Democratic interference with Republican primaries, similar to the Democratic mischiefs during 2000 presidential primary

Well, the jokes on them.

Their best chance to win that seat would have been to get Reed a win in the primary. Then they could have polarized the whole election. Maybe even won a few other elections in the state by turning off or flipping voters.

As it is, Perdue will win reelection as Gov., Cagle will probably win Lt Gov, and then be in place to run and possibly win the next time the Gov seat is open.

And Reed will probably work on all of this behind the scenes.

But laugh it up, gay groups.

And many republicans in McKinney's district crossed, pulled a Dem ballot and voted against her. That's the name of politics in GA.

I voted for Kucinich in the 04 primary.

It is what the fag ass fairies do - expect this type of "false" voting to go on all over the country. Do away with the primaries, no better yet do away with the...

It reminds me of the Democrats voting overwhelmingly for McCain during the open Republican presidential primary in 2000:
Alluding to the many Democrats who voted on Tuesday, Engler told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, “We may not have had a Republican primary today.” Calling the Democratic voters “visitors for the day,” Engler said they “don’t appear to have any interest in staying with the Republican party.”

Seeking to replicate his formula for victory in New Hampshire, McCain urged Michigan Democrats and independents to go to the polls to support him. Engler assailed McCain for mailing postcards urging Democrats to vote in the primary — and noting they could switch back in future elections. The Michigan governor said the tactic was aimed at allowing the opposition to choose the GOP candidate who will face Al Gore or Bill Bradley in November.

Detroit autoworker Sheila McCaulley, a Democrat, told the Associated Press on Monday that she planned to vote for McCain, not because she liked McCain, but because she despises Engler. “If it will send a message to Engler to vote for McCain, I will,” McCaulley said.

Reed was the man who threw the Christian Coalition behind Bob Dole, which I think was the point where that organization lost its momentum and had never since recovered it. I respect his ideas, but the yoking of Christianity and politics is a hard job. I don't think he's ever quite figure out whether he should be a politician or a minister. It's hard to be both at once.

So they celebrated. Big deal! queers are party people. They'll celebrate at the drop on a pair of box shorts. If they interfered in that race and beat Reed they screwed themselves. Reed being beaten gives us a chance to claim we clean our own house and takes an issue away from their party.
