A controversial billboard has been moved from Tucson's Southside to north of Downtown. The conservative nonprofit group grassfire.org put the billboard up last Friday at Interstate 10 and South 6th Avenue. The billboard says, "Stop the Invasion, Secure our Borders." The message is a reference to illegal immigrants coming to the United States. When Elizabeth and Marvella Vargas left Gym's Fitness Center Friday morning, they noticed that the billboard was down, and the women were glad. Elizabeth Vargas says, "My parents came as illegal immigrants and they came for a better life, and I feel everyone is entitled to that." Marvella Vargas says, "I think (the billboard) it's just racist. To come down here in this particular area of town, this is primarily a Hispanic neighborhood." Friday morning, Clear Channel Outdoor Sign Company took the billboard down from I-10 and South 6th Avenue and put it up at I-10 and Miracle Mile. Clear Channel won't say why, but clearly it'll be more difficult to vandalize the new location. Steve Elliott, grassfire.org's president, says the move is okay with him. Elliott says, "The billboard is going to get a little different audience, so we're not disappointed the billboard has been moved and we hope it draws more people to this debate." Deanne Connor liked the sign where it was. Connor says, "I think they should secure our borders because there are a lot of people coming over to the United States that we don't know if they're terrorists or not." Illegal-immigrant rights activists hoped the sign was down for good. They're promising to lobby Clear Channel to remove it permanently. Isabel Garcia, of Derechos Humanos Coalition, says, "We're joining youth groups that are intent on demanding that Clear Channel not permit this kind of hate messaging in our community." Grassfire.org says it has paid to keep the billboard up for 30 days.
This taxpayer hates having public funds stolen by illegal aliens. What the heck is a "Derechos Humanos?" Sounds like a disease to me.
Your lazy-a$$ parents should have worked to build a better government in your own country rather than trample the laws of mine.
Then why didn't they come legally, Elizabeth?
I like my amnesty plan!
Please call them INVADERS and don't compare them to people who are legal aliens!
IF you aid and abet CRIMINALS, you are a criminal!
President Bush has been great on most things except for our border.
He has been great on the war on terrorists.
But on the border he is a gross failure.
He acted fast and correct on the 3,000+ people murdered at the world trade center.
He ignores the many rapes, murders and robberies which might be larger than the murders and money loss at the world trade center.
More Americans are abducted on the border of Mexico than in Iraq!
Start building the fence.
It should be made a felony for Criminals who overstay their visas and Invaders.
I believe we should give amnesty to these poor CRIMINALS or INVADERS.
This should be a 2 week amnesty to get the heck out of our Country.
The ones who ignore this amnesty should be buried in a tent city jail and fined $10,000 or buried elsewhere.
All aiders and abettors of these CRIMINALS or INVADERS should get 1 year in a tent city jail and a $10,000 fine for each CRIMINAL aided.
Those in government should be the first ones charged.
Hey Marvella! Check out the Laraza agenda. Absolutely pure racism.
Does anyone know how I can contact the billboard company to express my support?
I want a better life too, so, Elizabeth, I am going to rob you and take all your money. I know it's illegal but I'm entitled to it....
How stupid can this woman get?
Human Rights Coalition ?:
Idea: We have a right to cross any border and live wherever we want.
Try doing that with a country like Japan or Taiwan, or with that great neighbor of ours: Mexico. You will be arrested and put in jail in Mexico, and it will cost thousands of dollars for you to get out. My dollar will go further in Mexico, I think I will mosey on down there and say that their immigration laws are hateful because their economy will give me a much higher life style than I enjoy at present.
Here I come with my retirement bucks!
Reciprocity IS a beech , isn't it.
Goes to show you how stupid these POS illegal aliens are.
But we can ask for reciprocity as a principle of International Law.Yes , suprise , surprise, why haven't we heard RINO McPain and Teddey Weddy Kennedy speak about International law and Reciprocity? LOL. Reciprocity with Mexico should be a precondition to ANY amnesty for illegals in the USA.We can go to Mexico and retire there, living like KINGS, and all those tax dollars for Liberal Socialist programs cxan be spent south of the border out of our pockets!!
The billboard got toad!
The Republican Party has lost this voter over this issue. In November I shall vote the Constitution Party ticket.
Why not make them build the wall? They want to work.. We need the labor.. Its win win!!
I give the sign a big thumbs up!
There's no shortage of stupidity in this country as the borders should have been closed no later than 9-11.Our borders should be militarized with "spit&polish" and ALL immigration stopped.
A few years ago there were a few billboards along I-95 and U.S. 441 coming north from the Miami area that asked the ''...last American leaving Miami to ...please bring the flag.'' It caused a minor furor but didn't stop the flow.
<< ... (some mindless criminal alien invader spawn or other) says, "I think (the billboard) is just racist. To come down here in this particular area of town, this is primarily a "hispanic" neighborhood." >>
Well goll--lee.
If she hadna pointed that out, I'da sworn it was in an American neighborhood.
(Or: Thanks for making our point!)
Keep in mind that Tucson/Pima County is a leftie island of blue in a generally red AZ (Phoenix/Maricopa County is pretty deep red).
