JERUSALEM--Some 44 years ago, when Soviet missiles in neighboring Cuba threatened American cities, John F. Kennedy set one goal and ultimately prevailed in achieving it: Remove the missiles. Today, when Israel's cities are pummeled by Hezbollah missiles launched from neighboring Lebanon, our goal should be the same: Remove the missiles. Or destroy them.
It is not enough to push Hezbollah 30 kilometers north of the border. Hezbollah rockets have a range of up to 200 kilometers, and could easily be fired from Beirut. Nor is it enough to achieve a cease fire. With its missile arsenal intact, Hezbollah could re-emerge triumphant a year or two from now and again menace Israel's population.
The objective of the military campaign currently being waged on Israel's northern border, as well as any diplomatic effort to bring that campaign to an end, must therefore be to disarm Hezbollah, first and foremost from its missile arsenal. A failure to do so would be a great victory for that terror organization and for its sponsors in Tehran and facilitators in Damascus. It would enable Hezbollah to rebuild its lethal capacity for waging war, continue to threaten the people of Israel and hold hostage the people of Lebanon, and sow the seeds for an even greater conflict in the future. In contrast, disarming Hezbollah would help restore Israel's deterrence and security, give hope to a peaceful, prosperous and democratic future for Lebanon, and deal a heavy blow to the forces of international terrorism.

oh, please, why invoke the ghost of Kennedy now? It just gives Moby Dick moral capital (as he apparently is devoid of his own).
With all due respect to JFK, the removal of the missiles from Cuba was largely meaningless. Within a short time the USSR had ICBMs and long range bombers that could wipe us out as easily as the Cuban missiles could have.
In addition, Kennedy removed US missiles and other weapons from Turkey, and eased up in Berlin.
While it was certainly an eventful time, the actual results of the crisis, from the US POV weren't exactly stellar
How about destroy them then remove the missles?
When will people learn you cannot negotiate with terrorists? Israel caved as she was pressured to and look what it got her, another war.
It isn't Israel needing wiped off the map, it is Hamas, Hezbollah and all the rest of the radical terrorist groups.
He also agreed to the equivalent of a non-agression pact with Castro and agreed not to attempt to overthrow his regime. Kennedy was dead a year later(was Castro involved?)and Fidel is still here 45 years later.
So, if Netanyahu wants a Cuban-like solution that leaves Hezbollah in power with security guarantees, perhaps he should reread the history books.
I say Israel needs to use a few tactical nukes/neutron bombs and take out the hezbollah on the ground. a few neutron bombs in baalbek, hermel and those bunkers and we won't be hearing from hezbollah for much longer.
Where's the WSJ's proofreader? The title should say " -- Remove Hezbollah's missles -- ." Hamas is mentioned nowhere in the article.
(Go Israel, Go! Slap 'Em, Down Hezbullies.)
It is definately not possible, if that is what you believe. Beware the soft bigotry of low expectations.
Absolutely, 100% correct.
Netanyahu and most everyone knows that disarming Hezbollah IS destroying them.
Only one way to deal with these islamo-nazis:, kill them all. High speed lead, bio weapons, nuclear, take your pick. Wipe them out.
Do you have a source for this? I've heard that twice now on the board.
One of my assignments in the Army was, HQ TUSLOG DET 67 1977-79, TU overseeing 101 nuclear tipped Honest John missiles.
Then again, since my orders initially read Beirut LN, I guess I wasn't really there.
