Nixon aide: Kerry not too swift (John Dean: '23% of America is Protofascist')
The Boston Herald ^ | July 23, 2006 | Dave Wedge

Posted on 07/23/2006 6:50:04 PM PDT by new yorker 77

Sen. John Kerry’s 2004 presidential hopes were sunk when he buckled under to “authoritarian” conservatives hellbent on smearing his military record as part of a larger “proto-facist” movement, says a former top White House aide whose testimony helped sink Richard Nixon during the Watergate scandal.

John Dean, a Republican who served as Nixon’s top counsel, said Kerry slipped up during the 2004 campaign against President Bush by not suing the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth when they published a book calling into question the Bay State senator’s Vietnam service.

“What most surprised me is that Kerry never did anything with the Swift boat attacks,” Dean said. “He waited so long, it was shocking. I thought he should have brought a defamation action against them and he would have succeeded.”

Dean compared the situation to a suit brought by the late Sen. Barry Goldwater following his failed 1964 run for president. Goldwater won a lawsuit against a magazine that published a poll of psychiatrists who said he was “crazy.”

Dean was in Boston this week promoting his new book, “Conservatives Without Conscience,” a harsh indictment of the current GOP power structure that paints Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and other top party leaders as dangerous “authoritarians” who have ignored the ideology’s founding tenets.

“About 23 percent of the American people are authoritarian conservatives,” Dean said. “It’s proto-fascist behavior. While we’re not a fascist nation, we’re too close (for) comfort. I’m trying to warn people.”

Dean, who fired his first salvo at the Bush White House with his last book, “Worse Than Watergate,” slams the administration on the war in Iraq, accuses officials of fear-mongering and criticizes Cheney’s opposition to a congressional measure to ban torture.

Asked what he thinks the president would have to say about his book, Dean said: “He doesn’t read books. He has trouble reading his one-sheet summary papers.”

Dean is a vainglorious deceiver, always has been. His vendetta against Nixon drew attention away from his own criminal activities and laid them at Nixon's feet. Dean is best characterized as a slimey eel.

I'm old enough to remember Watergate very well. I wasn't involved in politics and didn't have a dog in the fight at the time. One impression I did take away from it, and it hasn't changed ... John Dean is a disloyal, disingenuous, self aggrandizing, lying piece of crap.

Because telling the truth is not yet against the law. The left keeps p!ssing and moaning about this because they don't have to substantiate their accusations.

What great propoganda. If one out of four of us can be labeled the enemy... leaving the population uneasy about the "enemy within," the same sort of person Hitler called "the secret Jew" and Mao called a "capitalist roader".... and when the Democrats gain power, they can start the roundups and arrests of those protofascists, for the "safety" of the population, of course...

It should be laughable that anyone who is in favor of limited government, gun ownership, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech can be labeled "fascist" by anyone and be taken seriously. Sadly, Dean's comments were printed apparently without response or a sneer on the op-ed pages. Pathetic.

Dean is such a blithering idiot. If Kerry had sued the Swift Boat Vets, he would have had disclose his service records in discovery. Now if he has nothing to hide that he doesn't want the rest of us to know, he would have released them back then. The real reason Kerry didn't sue the Swifties is he knew then and he knows now, that they're right that he's "unfit to command." After all, even a lawyer like Dean should know the truth is a complete defense to libel. Lame try and he still gets no cigar.

ROFLOL! The reason he didn't is because it was TRUE!

Maybe Dean should try NOT THINKING, it shouldn't be too hard for him. Or maybe just keep it to himself where he doesn't look so stupid because he doesn't know what he is talking about.

John Dean is still stinging from the revelation that his wife is a whore.

Thank YOU G. Gordon Liddy, for pointing that out! :)

John Dean is a either a sad pathetic loser still struggling to be relevant, or a cynical jerk making good cash of the Bush-haters.

Maybe Bush should take Dean's advice and sue Dean for libel.

If I'm not mistaken he did threaten a lawsuit and nothing ever came of it, his attorney's must have advised him he couldn't sue someone for telling the truth.

John Dean should go into retirement and shut up so he stops embarrassing himself.

What the hey would John Dean know about Conservatism anyway? He never was one. In fact, he worked for an administration that froze wages for Pete's sake! That was never done before or since. He's a proven coward like Kerry is.

Just what I just said. A lawsuit goes both ways. The Swifties as part of their defense, would have the right to see John Kerry's service records. And whatever is in them must be damaging or else Kerry would have felt confident about filing a lawsuit. If his reputation WAS really damaged by lies, surely he would want to restore it. We all know the truth - he never had one to begin with, even if he did spend Christmas in Cambodia and it turned out even that memorable incident was all made up!
